I recently got back in touch with my old friend group. We were the typical edgy kids back in college etc... I'm not innocent. I would make edgy jokes. We had some diverse friends in our group who were "fine with it" at the time... or at least would laugh things off I guess or just see them as "jokes".
I had a girlfriend about 2 years ago and we were together for nearly a year. She really made me see straight on how deeply entrenched in this mindset of hate I was. Any "red-pill" argument I had with her she effortlessly dismantled. I was so set in my worldview and I really can't thank her enough for starting my journey on moving away from that.
Anyway we broke up a year ago. All good. I'm glad we did as you can imagine it was a very tumultuous relationship as I was awakening to all this hate i had harboured.
Anyway... being with her, I left my group chats with my college friends. I got sick of seeing their "jokes".. the group.. now also... no longer has any diversity in it. Just white males strictly.. so I spent about a year and half distancing myself from them.. making new friends.. diverse friends and educating myself on how hateful the redpoll had caused me to be in my life. Overall... I felt much better and less like my personality was tied to these people.
Fast forward to present day. New city, no friends now... bored and lonely... I've been wanting to reconnect with them.
The problem is.. their humour has not evolved. It is a zero sum game of trying to say the most offensive thing possible. When I was younger, admittedly..m I would find this humour funny. But I was also an incredibly angry and hateful person as I'd had a very unhappy teenage experience... so I think that hate was a bonding outlet...
It is really sad because I guess I met lots of other people I liked but I always felt this weird connection to these people as I would see them so often..
Ultimately.. I'm back in touch with them now and am the overall theme of the group is still very much dark humour... I admit... I find some jokes funny... but on a deeper level I know that they perpetuate harmful concepts and I think it is purely because this was just how we bonded back in the day so it makes them seem like my "friends"..
Tl:dr
Got back in touch with friends who are still making racist jokes. I don't want to dismiss them as awful people but at the same time they haven't changed and I feel conflicted to just completely condemn them as awful people.. but at the same time I really don't like their exclusionary attitudes and humour.. any advice would be appreciated..
Just to say. They would never go out their way to be racist in real life to anyone and treat people at face value but there is truth in jokes and I don't feel good being associated with these people.
