I once told a bf when he complained that I didn't need him, "it's true that I don't NEED you, but I WANT you. Isn't that better?" No, he wouldn't agree to that. He wanted me to NEED him.
WTF, dude, I've been divorced for years. Why do you want me to not be able to support myself???
They want you to be dependent on them, but also don't want to support you financially. You can't have it both ways, son.

Exactly this! My ex begrudged the fact that I was fine with or without him. I suspect it made him feel insecure 🤷♀️

It does make them feel insecure. And they'll even tell you it does...without really telling you, yk? Telling a female you don't want her to get the better job, to go to school, or even to pursue her own dreams and aspirations is bs. You just don't want her to outshine you... When really, she just wants to shine with you. As a woman that's experienced it first hand.....I wish they knew we just want to do well and it's mostly a self satisfaction thing. I'm not competing with anyone with my goals...I'm competing with myself bc of all these men that come along and say "oh you don't need to do that..." "Oh just work here.." Then treat me like a joke when I start pursuing things...make me feel stupid and like I could never accomplish anything.. So now it's just a quiet hustle. I keep going for me, I gotta retrain my brain now that you've pushed me so far down.. Tell me "you have so much going for you" "you blow these girls out of the water" ...but you don't wanna be a part of it? No? Because of "how much I have going for me" ...makes you look like less. You jealous mf.

I swear I have read dating advice that tells women they have to make a man feel needed because that's how you get them to stay in a relationship. Huh guess I'll just stay single because I don't need a man for anything.

It's hard to take someone who's fended for herself for years and get her to trust you enough to need anyone. You don't do it by bullying her into "needing" you.
I'm willing to trust him enough to rely upon him when he proves himself trustworthy. That kind of trust is developed over time. Men are impatient.
