How do you do a background check?

Couple of tips:

Start with facebook. See if he's still friends with his ex (and her parents), and if he's kept the photos of them together public. Thats usually a sign that he still has feelings for her and/or is hoping they might get back together.

If he's told you who his close circle of friends are, check their profiles too. What kind of people are they? Do they seem like decent guys who are settled down or are they 'BROS' whose profiles are full of photos of their drunken adventures with the guy you're vetting. What kinds of things does he do for fun with his friends?

What are his families profiles like? What information can you gain from them? Does his brother look like a BRO?

Lastly his profile - what does it tell you about him and his behaviour? Does he have a lot of photos of him out drinking or with various girls etc? It's usually easy to gain a lot of information from facebook. For example if he says he's 35, but the people he's listed as former classmates are all 42ish; well you know he's lying. Did he say he's a Doctor but he seems to have no friends on facebook who work at the same hospital? Did he say he owns his house but there's no celebratory 'I bought a house today' post on facebook? Check what he's telling you.

Instagram is a great one as men seem to be morons on it. Basically look for if he follows any porn accounts on there like BigBustyBabes etc. A couple professional guys I dated (who also followed their bosses/colleagues and vice versa) followed such porn accounts. If he does, stop talking to him immediately. Not only is he stupid enough to advertise the porn he jerks off to - to the world, he also doesn't respect women.

Also see if his ex still likes his instagram posts and vice versa - again that's a sign that there's likely to still be something there.

Twitter - what kind of content does he tweet? What kind of people does he follow? Does he follow - say Trump and Tiger Woods?

The more information you have, the better equipped you are to make a decision. Try to be thorough.

If you have their full name, date of birth and hometown (or where he graduated HS) you can get a good chunk of info from those background check websites. Most of them offer free 1 to 2 week trials that you can cancel before being billed or you can pay like $5 for a one-time report. If you use the trials make sure you're able to cancel them on your own versus having to contact the company.

In CA there's an online database (through Megan's law) with the identifying information, photo, and names of sex offenders. I would be surprised if there wasn't something similar in your town or province? Maybe Google "sex offenders database" for your town or province?
