How to dress?

I often get compliments from men and women about how I dress, so I’ll break down what worked for me. I’m plus-size, but I feel this advice will work for anyone. I’m pretty much always in dresses. Maxi dresses and midi dresses are my favourite. I’m very, very busty, so cleavage is almost a given in most items that I wear, but I feel like wearing longer dresses balances that out.

The first, and probably most important tip I can give, is dress for your body shape. This will improve how you look so much, because it will emphasise certain features. For example, I’m heavy chested with a smaller waist and a bigger butt. So I find clothes that emphasise my waist. I look terrible in looser fitting clothes, so I tend to only wear stuff that’s fitted (not tight). Look at your own body, and see what features you want to emphasise. Then, you can find clothes that showcase that feature/s. You may have to experiment with what works for you, but there’s lots of inspiration out there. Which leads on to my next point...

Try and seek out women who have a similar body shape to you and look at what they wear. I found that Instagram was really good for this, as there’s lots of women on there with different figures. You may be surprised at what could look nice on you.

When you’re buying clothes, try to think of outfits, instead of individual items. I’m not saying you should buy entire outfits every time you shop, but if, say, you’re looking for a top, think about what else in your wardrobe it could work with. That’s how you start to develop your own sense of style. Dressing well does not have to be expensive at all. I regularly buy stuff that’s on sale.

Finally, confidence. Wearing clothes that you feel good in is the best outfit.

I dress conservatively because it’s often very comfortable. Dresses, sleeves, etc.

A friend’s friend once told me “you don’t dress like you’re an exciting person but you’re pretty cool.” I was wearing my “Christian cat mother of 50” floor length floral skirt, and a loose cardigan.

When I go to arcades or with friends, weather permitting, I’ll wear short workout skorts and silly shirts with a windbreaker. That being said I do have a vast collection of very nice dresses and such for work/outings etc

I dress for me, caring about what other people think is not worth it. Dudes will scope out your parts no matter what you wear, so might as well wear whatever you are most comfortable in

I definitely struggled with this too. What I did was make a capsule wardrobe for work and having only a few other random pieces for things like sorority functions or vacations. That won’t be for everyone, but the process of building a small wardrobe forces you to figure out how you actually like to dress and what makes you feel best, so even if you want to have a big wardrobe at the end, these 8 blog posts on building a curated wardrobe might be helpful. I know it seems like a lot but step one is basically “build a Pinterest board of fits you like and spot patterns”

Build a fit guide
Does your wardrobe fit your lifestyle?
Design your ideal capsule wardrobe (if you don’t want to make a capsule wardrobe you don’t have to, own as many things as you want)
Clean out your closet
Organize your closet
Create a shopping wish list

Dress in a way that’s flattering to your figure. In a way so people will notice you more for who you are and less your boobs/butt. Male sexual attention isn’t something you need to seek to get. Appearing in a way they perceive as “sexy” or “easy” may get you some temporary perks, but keep in mind that they won’t respect someone just because they want to sleep with them.

I’m 26. Casual: skinny Jeans, a colorful sweater, and some wedge boots to add height with a leather crossbody.

Ive been trying to shop more at banana republic instead of stores like free people because all their clothes are classy, chic, sexy, and can also be doubled as professional/work clothes depending on the piece.

I was always into vintage 50s (and maybe throw in a bit of 40s too) style, but I didn't dare to experiment with it. I found it's actually very easy to dress vintage inspired and still don't look too out of place. I like more conservative clothes (like swing skirts) on a regular day, but I can also easily amp it up with a sexy pencil skirt if I want to. Throw a tie-neck blouse on with a fitted cardigan on top - all in neutral colours and voilà, it's work appropriate! I really enjoy Dita von Teese's casual looks - basically all kinds of modern and basic tops with nice vintage skirts or some elegant trousers - because it downplays the "weird" element of dressing vintage but it's still unique and elegant. I also follow Shirinatra's instagram and youtube channel. She's younger than me, but has such a nice and coherent vintage inspired style - she found what colours and shapes work best for her and goes with them - while different things work for me (I resemble Dita in my colours), she's still a great source of inspiration in that aspect. Finding a distinct style I'm drawn to and adapting it to my attributes and my habits feels wonderful.

I think it'll all depend on your style and aesthetics. I would suggest finding someone whose style you admire and follow her on Instagram for reference. You could also follow your favorite brand's Instagram to get inspiration and lookbooks.

In terms of subreddits, r/Vindicta has good content on how to dress for your body type.

I love dressing "sexy" too but, in my opinion only, there is a huge difference between dressing "vulgar sexy" and "classy sexy". I strive for the latter. Since sexy does not always equal showing skin for me, it all comes to finding a balance on your outfit (ex. mix tight/crop tops with more "conservative" pants/skirts). Also looking for good quality fabrics in your garments.

Although I agree that no one deserves to be objectified no matter how they dress, and that ultimately it all comes to how your clothes make you feel, unfortunately impressions do matter, and you can wear clothes to your advantage to cause an effect on people.

When getting dressed for work, I always have in mind the quote "dress for the job you want, not the job you have". When going out, I try to "dress as if you are going to meet your worst enemy today". Lol
