Thanks for this. I just ended a friendship with a conversational narcissist. I had ended it once before but felt bad because she didn't have any other friends here and none of her adult children speak to her.

Then I realized there's a reason she doesn't have friends or relationships with her family. (I'm not saying everyone who's friendless is a terrible person, but she was.) She rarely asked me anything about myself and, when she did, it was obvious she wasn't listening to anything I said.

Anyway, being friends with her was exhausting. I feel relieved to be out of that relationship.

Wow super helpful article for a problem I just barely realized I had. I think it could help some of us remember to keep things 50/50 and to not accept less as anything less is not really a relationship.

Holy cow this describes the friend I recently let go of. At first I thought i was doing something wrong. Everytime I tried to talk about my interest or my life theyd always circle the convo back to themselves and skip over things I said.

This article has helped me validate my decision in letting them go 💀. Thank you for this!

My ex was like this and I didn’t realize it for years and years. It was the the point where I couldn’t pay attention to what he was saying and got extremely impatient and when it was “my turn” to talk I talked super fast and got really impatient and would repeat myself over and over from years of being ignored. After I left him then when I would talk to people I came across in that same way of never listening. It was pretty demoralizing but luckily I had self awareness and quickly adapted back to a way of mutual listening. So when people are like this sometimes I think maybe they endured the same thing and are afraid to listen lest someone run away with the conversation. One of the first times I spoke with a friend after getting out of the toxic relationship I remember she called back something I had said in a previous conversation and I was SHOCKED at how used to being ignored I was.
