I recently came across this article in the Huffington Post about the Pulse shooter (I won't list his name to avoid giving mass shooters any sort of recognition). Even though it's a couple of years old, I feel like I have to share it. In short, pretty much everything I had known about the shooting was wrong. There are a lot of parts to it, but I wanted to focus on the shooter's wife.

I always thought she had a hand in planning the attack. Nope. She was abused and dealing with a man who cheated on her and often watched porn. Prosecutors decided to try her for the shooting EVEN THOUGH they knew they had basically no evidence. Even worse, the prosecutor MISLED the judge who denied her bail because of it, meaning she was kept away from her child for over a year over a lie by omission.

I haven't read the whole case, and it's very possible that she's a horrible person. But I still feel like it shows that there is an obsession for society to see if a male shooter has some sort of partner-in-crime as a way to shift or dilute the blame for his actions.

Moreover, it's a sad statement on society that people immediately look to the partner of a monster killer and assume she is an evil mastermind instead of another victim.
