I think the advice about waiting until you trust him somewhat is spot on. I think you can build a pretty good overall picture of a guy by how he treats you and others in public, how he talks (if he talks) about former relationships, his parents, etc.

If he doesn't seem resentful, doesn't have anger issues, isn't disrespectful to the people around you, doesn't come across as overly eager to get you into bed ASAP and can voice a difference of opinion in a positive way, you can trust him in your bedroom. I suppose if you really want neutral ground there's always the option to do a weekend away together.

But I think you named the real issue there - you don't trust your own judgement anymore. But then again, even being cheated on is not the same thing as having issues finding out whether you are physically safe around a new guy, right? You can't rule out being hurt emotionally if you choose to sleep with someone. You can only tell yourself that you've taken positive, rational steps to vet the guy and done 'due diligence'.
