If it was only a 9 month relationship, then 3 months could be an acceptable amount of time. I would pay close attention to how he talks about her (if he does at all). If he's comparing you to her at all, or talking shit about her, I'd move on because nobody worth your time should be doing that crap anyway.

Something that can help you figure out if you're a rebound is asking why the relationship ended. If he says something that has to do with himself, like "I just needed to focus on work/myself/whatever" or something along the lines of "I wasn't ready for a relationship", I'd bail. There's no reason to expect he won't feel the same way when he's with you.

However, if it's more like "She just wasn't right for me" or it was something like a personality/values clash, that's a better sign.

My general rule of thumb is too NEVER be the first after a break up. But nine months isn't really that long. I am going to suggest you date him ONCE. And if he starts talking endlessly about that relationship, and seems to be in grief or anger about it, than he is not ready to be dating. Use caution.

I don't think you'd be a rebound at that point, however, you may want to align on expectations. Does he want another relationship? Is he interested in commitment or connection?
