I was actually speaking about to a non-FDS female friend about this. She's on reddit and hasn't heard good things about this place (despite me defending it).

Anyway, one of her worries was that she was afraid that by following the FDS rules, I 'could be missing out on experiences because I am afraid of getting hurt'.

I pointed out that I am happy to miss out on experiences that I know will eventually hurt me - either because they already personally have hurt me in the past, or because I have heard other women describe patterns that fit my situation down to a T.

I believe that we should see it like sex. Yes, you could have unprotected and maybe nothing bad could happen.. but why take that risk? Why chance the need for an abortion or antibiotics (in the case of a curable STI) when you can just prevent it happening completely by using a condom/abstaining? Why self harm by entertaining men who are ultimately damaging to your psyche AND body when you don't need to? Why walk towards a freaky sound in your basement, when you're home alone and you have just seen that there's an escaped crazy axe murderer on the loose?

Okay, that last one was kind of broke the analogy, but you get what I mean. HEED SIGNS. If you're like me and you tend to downplay them, create a list or spreadsheet of red/yellow/green flags or likes/dislikes and keep it updated as you date multiple people. I guarantee that it will serve you well.

Something I learned this year: you can prevent re-traumatization. That's not to say that you can't blame the perpetrators for what they did to you. They are absolutely at fault for the trauma they inflicted on you, but you can avoid situations that you know have traumatized you in the past.

This has helped me immensely.
