Hi guys! I’m in desperate need of advice. Hope I could get some good feedback!

There’s this guy (20M) who I (20F) have been seeing and talking to for the past 5 weeks. We met on a dating app and we’ve had conversations about what we were looking for and expected from each other. We wanted to hang out and talk with the intention of potentially developing a relationship with time after getting to know each other. We’ve been meeting up like once or twice each week and we FaceTime every once in a while in between. We both agree that we vibe well together and that we have a pretty good connection. He works full-time and he is also a full time student (last year in college and will graduate 2021). This week he said he’s suddenly thought about it and decided that he was not ready for a relationship right now because of the demands from the commitments he’s made with work and everything else. He said he still wants to be able to talk and hang out regularly. I asked if this meant that there would be potential for development in the future or that we would be strictly friends (to make sure I don’t misunderstand). He didn’t answer with a clear ā€œyesā€ or ā€œnoā€ but instead said that it wasn’t a clear and cut thing and that you have to keep hanging out with someone and get to know them to see if you want a relationship with them or not. He said that right now, he was leaning more towards friends. The thing is that in order for you to keep hanging out with them to see if you want to be with them, you have to have some interest/hope/fantasy in the back of your mind that you can be with the person later. If you retract and decide that you’re just friends with them, then that possibility of something developing in the future disappears because your perspective of them changed—you no longer see them in a romantic light. He said he doesn’t want anything romantic right now and doesn’t see me romantically. However, when I asked, he said he was still interested in and attracted to me, otherwise he wouldn’t have made advances to hug, kiss, and be intimate. I asked if we were to continue hanging out like he hoped, would we continue doing all those things or stop. He didn’t give me an answer. He said he’s not ready for the emotional/romantic investment of a relationship. Over than volunteering to take someone’s baggage and help deal with their shit (which I haven’t thrown onto him), the only other thing would be to talk and hang regularly (which is what he wants to continue to do). It’s not so much as an obligation/responsibility/investment as something that you desire. When you’re into someone, you naturally want to talk to them and hang out with them and care for them. I don’t understand what he’s trying to give up. When I say that just being friends would mean there’s no possibility of development, he says things like that it could still always be open and on the table. If he’s trying to refute my conclusion about that, that means part of him still wants to potentially be with me, right? But when I ask if he DOES want to continue doing what we’re doing with some interest in future romantic development, he says he doesn’t want to say anything and make promises. Bruh am I just reading too much into this? I just don’t want to wait and get hurt if it’s something that I could’ve prevented. He’s in a paused/transitional stage in his life with graduating soon and working without knowing what his passion is so I understand and I don’t want to pressure/stress him out. My friend said that I don’t have anything to worry about right now and I should continue being with him. Should I just keep hanging out and enjoy the company? The thing is, I like him A LOT so the need to want to be with him more romantically is just going to be freaking me out.

That was long 😬 I’m sorry for those of you who read it. Thank you and I look forward to your responses.

Edit: lol everyone’s so pessimistic and quick to judge/assume about me being used. I’m not able to comment bc it says i haven’t been assigned a flair in this group.

we HAVENT smashed yet. He’s still a virgin. I’m not and I’ve wanted to but he said he’s not sure yet so he’s not ready. I don’t think he wants to be fuckbuddies or fwb. We’re family friends
