For those who'd like to know, here's how to disable private messages:
Log on from your desktop, click on your profile, and then user settings where it says "chats and messaging" and disable both.
You also go to notifications, scroll down and disable notifications for messages, but for some reason you might still see notifications on the app.
So if you get any fantom notifications, you go to the app inbox at the upper right hand corner, tap on the dotted line and you can mark inbox contents read, so you don't see the notifications anymore.
The notification without the message is actually nice. It's SO satisfying to know that some sociopath spent all that time writing an abusive message but nobody will ever see it.
You will still see notifications from the mods and women who comment your stuff here!
You can also leave a message in your profile for those who have a legitimate PM reason to write to you in the comments first, so you can whitelist them.
And make sure to whitelist /u/reddit (the name without the /u/) if you want to be notified when you receive a precious metal.
