Believe women!

I would like to coin a term for an informal fallacy that I see in the wild ever more often. Appeal to grieved identity is similar to an Argument from authority or an Appeal to popularity, except in this case the authority is replaced by disadvantaged identity. "What I say is true, because I am a [woman, trans, Black, gay, disabled]".

This fallacy should not be confused with an attack on Intersectionality, which correctly claims that "different modes of discrimination combine". For instance, the claim "As a [disabled, trans, Black, gay, woman], I have a worse access to education" is specific, testable and in many situations true. (As long as you don't claim it is automatically true in all situations.)

In relationship to other fallacies, the Appeal to grieved identity is mirrored by the classical ad hominem, where an argument is said to be false because of the identity of the arguer, as in "We don't have to listen to this [white, male, cis, straight, able] person (because he is privileged)". And finally, as formal fallacies go, it is a clear non sequitur, because your identity, however disadvantaged, does not make your argument true.

As Left Wing Male Advocates, we believe in egalitarian values. That means your gender, skin color, sexual orientation, nor any other immutable characteristic does not make your argument right or wrong.
