So it is always easy to critique "neoliberal feminism", it is obviously an ideology of the ruling class.
But there is also a strain of feminism that calls itself "Marxist", "Materialist" or "Proletarian". This feminism takes up the issues that poor women face. It also is anti-capitalist and sees the "Patriarchy" as inherently connected to Capitalism. It posits that the abolishment of one is dependent of the abolishment of the other.
My two cents on this:
First of all, the fact that there even needs to be a distinction between Bourgeois and supposedly Proletarian Feminism makes me highly suspicious. One of them happens to focus more on the aspirations of professional women, the other takes up issues of poorer women - but that doesn't necessarily make it "Materialist", let alone "Marxist". I can easily imagine a distinction between different kinds of white supremacy, one supports the upper middle class through police, gated communities, low taxes, the other is based in on poor rural white communities... in fact, such a distinction pretty much exists between different kinds of white supremacist movements. Is one more or less "Materialist" than the other because of this? No. Absolutely not. The same principle, i would argue, applies to feminism. From a Marxists perspective, both are identitarian movements that objectively work to smooth over actual class distinctions. In fact, the identitarians that are focused on working-class people are even worse, because they are diverting revolutionary potential and sorely needed class consciousness away from the actual struggle.
I'm not trying to say that feminism is as bad as white supremacy, however i think the same principle applies to both: Through their embrace of identities as the site of struggle, they objectively have a class collaborationist function and thus serve the Bourgeoisie.
The argument that is brought forth by feminists against this is that the Patriarchy is inherently connected with Capitalism, and that one can not exist without the other, thus feminism is inherently a class issue. I fail to see how this is true at all. The justifications for this belief are always incredibly shoddy and half-assed. Finally, if Proletarian Feminism truly only focuses on class-related issues that working-class women face, therefore excludes the female labor aristocracy, petit-Bourgeoisie and Bourgeoisie, then why have feminism at all, why is the identitarian framing still needed?
