The title is something I wrote that I think better summarized the proposition in the article. The original title and subheading are below:

"For People Just Leaving Prison, a Novel Kind of Support: Cash

Joining a raft of initiatives aimed at helping the formerly incarcerated, a program gives money to defray expenses they face, including court fines and rent."

UBI programs have a hazy status in terms of popularity in the US as they quickly get compared to public assistance and all the baggage those programs have in the public eye. I think the specific assistance initiatives suggested and studied in this article are interesting as they target a group of people not talked about in terms of their financial struggles, ex cons which are disproportionately men considering the amount of people imprisoned for both violent and non violent crimes are men. Programs like the one in the article provide some policy steps to re-integrate men into society rather than let them fall through the cracks.

There's even a similar bill being suggested in New York that is already facing some challenges but it also gives me hope that these policies will gain more traction and move us towards a world where men won't be left to die in poverty simply for serving their time in prison.
