Amber Heard: 'I can't promise I won't get physical again, I get so mad I lose it.' "Video" link in the article contains Heard admitting she can't control her physical violence when she's angry. Female violence isn't acknowledged enough when it comes to male victims.

It focuses on the actual problem: the ways in which society discriminates against men, rather than couching it all in terms of "toxic masculinity."

I only have a problem with one part:

"The biggest challenge is … tackling the male tendency to suffer in silence," says Tim Samuels, presenter of Radio 5's Men's Hour. "We're getting better at admitting to our weaknesses or seeking help, but there's still such a long way to go."

You acknowledge that there are all these institutional, systemic biases against men and boys in our society, and then say the main problem is that men/boys aren't asking for help? Like, it's on us to ask for help, even though society punishes us when we ask for help? This is a transparent victim-blaming approach, and it's a major reason I find "toxic masculinity" to be so offensive as an approach to men's issues.

Still, other than this, the article does a good job of keeping the focus on the societal discrimination and saying that our society needs to change how it treats men, rather than bemoaning how men need to change themselves so they're not so toxic.

Sadly, it's hard for me to imagine such an article appearing in a publication like that post Brexit and Trump.

Regardless, it's an excellent article. Very level headed and respectful toward men's struggles.

It started before Trump. The SOCJUS bent has more to do with intersectionality and feminism because it started before Trump. For example, I remember being extremely disgusted by Jessica Valenti's articles in 2014.

I don't know what Brexit and Trump have to do with men and masculinity and why both "sides" of the culture wars seem to tie the two together.

They shouldn’t in theory, but I noticed a much sharper divide between the two sides of the political spectrum due to those two events. The media which remains largely biased to the left seems afraid to say anything that might be construed as sympathetic to a right wing cause. Ridiculously enough a lot of people seem to think of the gender wars as a zero sum game; if you want to help women you’re part of the left, and if you want to help men you’re part of the right. It should be as simple as wanting to help both sexes because you’re a decent person, but that wouldn’t fit the agenda.

Yet the right has a lot of female favouring aspects anyway lol

There’s a lot of that sort of intellectual sorting. The more left wing the publication, the more they do it. It’s becoming a thing where ‘men’ are considered ‘rightwing’. The extreme leftists think ‘men’ are on the whole, against abortion for some reason.

Jessica Valenti was an innovator among SJWs, she and a few other Guardian columnists took up deliberate trolling of their own readers, salting their articles and headlines with outrage triggers. Debate would rage in the comments, raising their engagement score for advertisers.

Demogogues like Trump, McCarthy, and the current crop of European right wing populists generally gain from creating, inflaming and exploiting divisions within society. They use fear as the prime energy source for their movement.

Fear is the most powerful engine of division and is impossible to argue against, it trumps all other emotions. As a primal emotion it is created deep in the brain and frames each situation before thoughts have even reached the outer layers where logic or facts can be processed. Thus the remarkable irrelevance of objective reality to demagogues. They work at the emotional level not the logical level. Their followers don't care about the factual lies, they care about the emotional truths that the lies convey.

Trump is spectacularly good at surfing over a wave of lies and distractions but he is not the first. GW Bush was a precursor, and seemed at the time about as bad as a person could get and still be elected.
Hitler wrote about the somewhat related Big Lie in Mein Kampf, and his administration was ruthless in its disregard for truth. Hitler's brownshirts intimidated the press well before he took formal control of newspapers.

Brexit is an instance of Trumpism. Fear of immigrants taking jobs and housing, immigrant crime, cultural dilution / replacement. Working class distrust of federal government / EU parliament. Cambridge Analytica to secretly deliver microtargetted personalised Facebook adverts.

The Guardian used to be decent so it's not surprising.

[–]mtcapri[S] 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So did The NY Times, WaPo, and CNN. Sad falls from grace. Woke culture poisons everything.

[–]antilopes 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

They are still fine papers, you need to allow for the cultural difference.

[–]mtcapri[S] 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The NYT and WaPo have managed to at least maintain the caliber of their writing and journalism, but they've followed Fox News' example of late and become far more partisan in their selection of stories and editorials. That makes them worse IMO. Didn't read the Guardian until relatively recently, but they're in the same league.

CNN, however, has truly diminished in quality over the past 10-20 years. I remember when they used to be a highly respectable news source; now they're practically a tabloid by comparison.
