First: Get a lawyer. Nothing can substitute for proper, professional, and most importantly, specific legal advice.

Second: Tell your loved one to stop talking to the police under any circumstances. The police's job is to find evidence of guilt, not to find evidence of innocence. All contact with the police should be handled through the lawyer.

Third: Your loved one should document every interaction (emails, texts etc) they have had with this woman, and make backups of everything. Give it to the lawyer. I repeat: do not contact or give anything to the police without first consulting a lawyer.

Fourth: There are men's groups that can help with this kind of thing. I consider contacting the National Coalition for Men if you are American or the Canadian Association for Equality if you are Canadian. Even if they cannot help you directly, it is likely they will direct you to someone who can. Consider any general legal referral service/index as well.

Fifth: Be sure your loved one has the emotional and mental support they need.

Also, polygraphs are little more than pseudoscience. In practice they're just a technique police use for interrogations. It is likely the police already assume his guilt and are looking to find proof of it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. We have a good lawyer, and are fighting this thing pre-charges at the moment. Been over a week and no comments or communication from police. I appreciate everyone providing links to services and orgs willing to help in this matter.

Once this is over, I will provide a full update with details to help others.
