Even when I wanted to get married, engagement rings seemed like a complete scam to me. I couldn't see myself spending more than 200-300 dollars on a ring. I was actually wondering if I could make one of my own, that way it was a lot more special.
I'd go on a nice honeymoon with that money or spend it on settling in to a new home with my partner. But those were old plans anyway.
