This girl I was banging in college was going into a Comp Sci field. She's a poster child for how to become an old cat lady. This was back in the late 80's early 90's. She barely got through it and was by her own admission a C student. When she got out she could pretty much write her own checks, though. Mostly because companies loved being able to have a female programmer so they could check off a diversity box, even back then. It didn't hurt that she was a hot redhead, I'm sure.

Fast forward to now, though. The wall hit. My guess is that she's barely passable as an actual worker and without her looks to persuade others to do the job for her it's gotten a lot tougher. She got fired from a string of jobs for under performing, and had to scale back from large companies to smaller companies. So she bitches a lot about how tough the work is to some of our mutual friends. She's also never been married, and the window for that closed a long time ago. Cue the 'Where have all the good men gone?'

Also she's gotten religious. A girl that got off having covert public sex, and loved bondage is now spewing bible verses and memes about god all over her social media. Which is usually a signal for 'I'm going to church desperately trying to find a guy who will commit, even a beta. Maybe even pry one away from his wife if I can.'

It's pretty sick to watch, really.

I was around a lot of folks that used programming to model various systems. The men were a class above. Among folks that could actually do it well, it was like 10 men to every 1 woman.

To be fair I know 2-3 women who are fairly competent (more competent than a lot of guys I know who hold down jobs in IT). However, I know a lot of people in IT and I literally am talking about 2-3 of them. We're talking 1% tops. At my workplace it is probably close to 50% women in IT-related work (though women skew in favor of jobs like business analysts and project managers and away from people doing actual technical work - though these seem to be the only jobs the company is interested in hiring for anyway). Even in these softer areas the women generally are less competent than the men, though they can be adequate. Granted, this is in a company which is anything but top-tier in IT.

I should probably qualify even those statements because even those "exceptional" women are really just above average when compared to guys I know in IT. Sure, they can program moderately well, and make public contributions, but they're nowhere near the people who are movers and shakers. They just stand out because they're women who actually understand how a computer works.

In any case, I'm all for hiring women in technical careers when they're actually competent. The problem is that diversity requirements generally push managers to have to fill 50+% of their positions with women and that requires bringing in a lot of people who are mediocre at best. Sure, plenty of mediocre guys work in corporate IT, but you still find some real shining stars among them. Not so much with the women it seems.
