Remember, once upon a time both dogs and cats served important functions on the family farm/homestead. Cats were kept around to keep mice, rodents and small varmints out of hay barns and grain bins. Dogs for herding and defense of livestock, property and people.

Sadly, nowadays, cats have been lowered to the position of feminist companions. No cat deserves that fate.
