I started looking at things(plants, objects in the room) and seeing how well I can match their angles/proportions. I think that got me started pretty well, as long as I stayed consistent in drawing.

You should check the drawabox website. You will learn the fundamentals of drawing. They also have a subreddit.

Practice practice practice practice... (Ad infinitum.) Any artist should tell you that. Sticking to it is the hard part.

However a lot is breaking things down into shapes. Contrast of light and dark, or volumes in space. (Think in the forms of geometric solid primitives, and overlap them.) That gives an idea of form, form an idea of structure. Other things with more liberty are line weight, patterns, and texture.

Some things that can help get a better idea of space are using grid lines over a reference and doing mirror or upside-down drawings. Then you get an idea of lines and proportion. More like another practice exercise than some absolute to rely on.

Udemy has some drawing courses. I got all mine for $20 a piece at the time. They always have discounts on courses though.

Learning how to draw = 10% inspiration and 90% transpiration. So learn the basics like perspective. And then draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw,... It took me about 2 years of a lot of drawing in order to get a decent drawing out of me.

I’m not an artist by any means, but I have drawn a couple characters before (mainly my own). The best advice I can give is to try and either Imagine a certain detail or find something to look at and examine it really closely. All drawing is essentially making a bunch of lines, so if you go one detail at a time and think of them in an abstract sense (it’s not a ‘head’, it’s an oval with a point at the bottom) you can piece together a drawing that ends up looking pretty solid.

Again, I’m not really an artist where I can imagine something insane and draw it, but I do know that if I can find something to look at, I can most likely draw it with time

I think with anything, learning comes down to actually just doing the thing and learning as you go. I know it does not sound very glamorous, but I don't think there is any special "trick" that gets around just doing and learning as you go, especially with something creative and physical like drawing.

Hey from a professional artist. Awesome that you’re looking to improve, welcome to a powerful journey. I have a ton to say obviously, look for a podcast in the near future, but I’ll leave you with some practical tips per your question. For extremely rapid improvement, always look to drawing from life. Bring a sketchbook everywhere you go, and do long and short sketches anytime something catches your eye. Try to capture reality. And don’t shy away from any subjects; you can get just as much out of drawing a cup on a table as you can drawing a grand natural vista. Now, the pinnacle of observational drawing is figure drawing. That’s because your brain is hard-wired to have the keenest observational skills to the human face (specifically your mothers face); this will sharpen your observational and drawing skills unbelievable fast. Go to life-drawing events and try to do both nude and costumes figure drawing. Do 2 min drawings, do 3-hour drawings, and everything in between. Sketch people in public, sketch still-photos, sketch friends and family. Hands, faces, full-body. Nothing will level you up faster. Next best is doing master copies; find your favorite artists, and try to replicate their work. This will give you a very good idea of your skill level. Copy the masters, do the same piece once a month and compare your progress. Be relentless, be critical, but never put yourself down. Last exercise. Draw from the imagination. Visualize something in your head, a creature, a character, a landscape- and draw it. Try to capture the mood, try to capture the vividness of your imagination. This will build your creative muscles and push your imagination to new heights. All three of these exercises will make you level-up extremely fast as long as you’re dedicated and rigorous. Embrace the failure, enjoy the process. Remember as Dostoyevsky said, beauty will save the world. Now go create something beautiful. Hope this helps. Post some sketches soon.

Still life studies and basic shapes, don't worry too much about making the best drawings ever, it's okay to suck at first. You don't need expensive tools or materials, a small set of pencils with different hardness, eraser and sketchbook are all you need to get started. You might be required to buy more supplies if you choose to attend an art class. Youtube also has plenty of useful tutorials if you're trying to keep costs down.

If you want to do digital art, I'd recommend looking into an iPad and procreate. I don't own one myself but I've tried a friend's and it was way better than my surface pro.
