What is sad to me, is that no one helped him along the way? Seems to me like he was half through, the entire village should see the benefit of this and help him out - either providing him with tools, or labour to help with this project that would benefit all of them.

This actually isn't that great. Should we destroy naturally occurring things to accommodate a small few people? Imagine if everyone cut down forests or mountains or whatever was obstructing them, nothing would be left.
