What if your waiter was a guy working minimum wage from a three figure income and lost it all because of his ex-wife but is going through divorce and is now working at a restaurant just to pay the bills and court fees, would you still refuse to tip him even though he was really nice to you regardless of what he is going through in his personal life? I get that you're mad at the girl for talking about that but please DON'T EVER generalize people based on ONE BITCH.

i tip but i am picky. sometimes i dont. i only do when the service was genuinely good and i enjoyed myself there. if their salary sucks, guess what, get another job. tough. economics 101. did you ever go to japan ? you will like it, they dont ever tip. they also dont expect you to get overpriced drinks with your meal. its totally normal to just order food then you will get water free of charge. first time there i did not know about it and wanted to tip, they refused it. tipping is just a weird cultural thing we have that most people here take for granted.

I usually tip, in cash too, because where I live servers make below minimum wage and live off of tips, but I do make exceptions, you have to provide adequate service...here's my story of entitlement.

About 4 years ago I was in Newark airport waiting for a connecting flight, I was starving so I went into a restaurant. My waitress, you could tell she used to be a real blonde bombshell in her 20's, I would have guessed her age at about early 40 something then and you could see the all the signs of her SMV decline but she did her hair, make-up and high heel shoes in a style that would just be better left in her 20's. Anyway the bill comes, I paid by credit card with the intent of leaving a cash tip on the table. She walks off to process my card, she looks at the signed slip immediately turns around in a confrontational manner and pissed off tone of voice, "You didn't include a tip, was there a problem with my service?" My response was, "Well I was going to leave some cash on the table as a tip so it's tax free but now I do have a problem with your service." I got up to leave and she started shouting at me calling me an asshole.

Nah fuck that nonsense. If they're paid less than minimum wage it's a scam that shouldn't be tolerated. I don't mind paying more in my bill so the staff can get paid a living wage. I also don't want to tip but I also don't want to be a dick.

If they give me a good and swift service, with a positive/respectful attitude and good manners, I'll tip. If give a bad and sloppy service I wouldn't. Life is simple.

Servers are usually women, food preps are usually men. I'd rather tip the food preps but can't so I'd rather not tip a woman simply for having a pretty face who takes my order and picks up my food.

I don't agree. How well food is prepared is a function of skill and will. People could do worse in serving or delivering and that's what no-tip is for.

I'm Australian. Tipping is a weird thing to me, and just seems like an excuse to underpay workers. We have minimum wages here, so tipping is entirely discretionary (and I'd only ever tip someone that was serving food if I did tip, or if the change from a sale was small or if I didn't want to carry the coins). If someone does an exceptional job they can be rewarded for that, but if they aren't doing a good enough job that is an issue for the business to deal with - the worker is their responsibility, not mine.

They deserve far more than minimum wage for having to be at the beck and call of every socially retarded asshole who sits his ass down at the table. The fact that you think that is "worthless" only proves that you are one of those socially retarded assholes.
