This. I have an iPhone 6s Plus because it was the last iPhone to have a headphone jack and because it can do everything I need it to do. Can I afford the new iPhone? Yes, I could go to any store and pick one up without even thinking. Am I going to waste over 1k on a phone? No, I can do better things with that money.

There seems to be a weird prejudice against taking the bus in the USA. It's dumb. In most places there is nothing shameful about using public transport. Having a nice car is desirable, of course, but even people who have cars use buses, subways, trams, etc., in order to avoid gridlock and parking fees.

This mentality is widespread among the younger generations. I had an iphone 4s which was a survivor and lasted five years. I once asked a waiter at a cafe if they had a charger for it (they usually have a bunch for different models). The guy said no and laughed as if in disdain! I felt so sorry for him. He was probably 18, earning his first money waiting tables, wasting it on useless shit and despising people who aren't.

I have a perfectly serviceable three year old Moto X4. It does all the normal phone stuff - I can ignore anyone who has the audacity to call me, delete all incoming text messages, completely fail to have a facebook account, read e-books, and use the GPS.

It's never been on a bus with me, but I've had to hold it in my hand while I try to decide which motorcycle to ride.

Yup all about outward displays of wealth. doesn't matter what actual wealth you have.

I remember after graduating I CHOSE to live in a cheaper small apartment near the city instead of a luxury apartment that most people my age rented when I was 24. I made 80K a year but CHOSE to only spend only 650 a month on a 1 bedroom studio (this is back in 2010 when they were cheaper).

I remember some girls would come to my place and visibly be turned off by the fact that I chose to live in a (still good) smaller brick apartment. I also drove a used car. after all fixed expenses, I had 4,500 to spend EACH MONTH. 2.5K went to savings. 2k went to fun. thats a damn good life.

stayed in that place for 6 years. the average luxury apartment was around 1,3000 a month.

that's(1300- 650)*6*12 = 47,000 I saved over those 6 years. I invested in the market instead which turned into ~190,000 since I invested near the bottom of the market.
