Women need monogamy and/or commitment from men for 3-5 years after the birth of a child, then they prefer polygamy again; generally speaking, there are always exceptions.

Men want variety but are willing to give that up for a stable relationship with one women, generally speaking.

The problems start when the woman has her kid and is back to work and determines that she doesn't need the man any more because he's boring and no longer attractive to her. If they're married it's an even better deal because she can take the kid and strip the father of his resources and property in the process.

I would say that the best life a man can have is serial monogamy without ever having kids or getting married, or living with anyone. You retain your independence and you're wealth. Don't get anyone pregnant and you're getting the most you can out of life.

You want kids? Donate sperm. They'll come find you later if they're interested.

Poly is more normal. Monogamy barely exists in the animal kingdom.

Monogamy can exist in poly, but poly remains a true representation of reality. Otherwise marriage would never be needed. And no one would sleep around, male or female.

I think as far as furthering a species monogamy still works best because if everyone has sex with everyone, who pays to raise those kids? I believe having kids is the point of life, otherwise there is no life.. but if you make enough money to be polygamous and support those kids then do it.

Since we find monogamy in nature I would argue it is not a social construct, but something that is indeed real and found in nature. Then again to make a divide line between nature/nurture is very hard to do (in my mind everything is either nature or not nature the distinction is not that important to me).

Anyway to answer your question more in the way I think you intented I will rephrase the question as follows (if I make a mistake her then my fault, but hopefully my answers would still be of some interest): Is the idea that humans are monogamous animals a social construct? And to that question their are many intressting answers. One that jumps to mind is that monogamy was introduced to keep beta males from revolting against the alpha males. In Hobesian terms how strong one might be if there is not social contract he could be killed by a thousand weaker then him. So to make sure that almost all men in a society are provided with a wife (and the wife provided with a men/rescources/protection) is the best way to keep a strong social contract. Since if we let hypergamy run its course men will either go away from women (refusing to be second best), or revolt. So in that case the idea of monogamy is a social construct but a very practical one to keep the fabric of society together. And as we know from the data its way better to raise a child with two parents instead of a single one, making sure the next generation is in better shape which is also important in a society.

Was this all thought of when people started talking about monogamy? I dont think so, I simply believe that when people are in love they are so high on eachother they are willing to make grand total gestures, proclaiming soulmates, pair bonds, and that they will always love and care for eachother. Ofcourse the love fades and this becomes harder and harder to life by. But this love probabbly led to some concept of staying together forever, mix this in with a religion which in general want families which teach the childeren to believe (therefore a strong family unit), and which want to have alot of followers (so only sex after marriage and then as much childeren as you can). And viola we got the concept of monogamy. So I think the cause for the rise of the monogamy concept finds itself in the nature of human beings being in love, then with a couple of other cultural stuff mixed in we got the concept as we know it. And this concept tended to work for along time to keep everybody in control that is why we actually started believing monogamy was something which was natural to human beings, while this is only partly true.

Are we then polygamous in nature, one could look at the great apes and argue yes, but this seems to be a bit of a naturalistic fallacy. In my mind its hard to trace what we are as a tabula rasa so to speak. We are always some what influenced by ideas of our culture/society so to say we are or are not mono/polygamous is quite hard. However I do believe that if we look at hypergamy for example that we indeed do have some polygamous nature in ourselves. When people fall in love we might be more monogamous, but when we are just looking to fuck (procreate) then we are definitly polygamous. Just look at the women chasing the top men to have the best genes (according to their natural instinct), and all the men wanting to fuck almost any women since we just want to spread our seed. So to sum up, I think when we are in love we are for a short while monogamous (which in turn led to the concept as we know today, which was held onto for along time sinse it had great benifits socially), but when it comes to sex and procreation we are polygamous. Ofcourse stuff gets really messed up when these two processes are running together in one relationship which we see all the time (first real monogamous love, then back to polygamous love).

Sorry for the long post, but I think this is not even a small percentage of what can be said about monogamy, great discussion post!

Women profit much more from Monogamy than Men, why?

Men usually are committed to the relationship and they share their resources with their Wife who pretends to be monogamous, but she has dicks on the side, meaning she has the best of both worlds.

If things went back to their natural state (Polygamy) I have no doubt that the "Undesired" Men would come out on top as they would no longer be obligated to share their own resources (Enforced by the Government at that), but that would also mean that sooner or later society would crumble and we would be back to the beginning.

Overall we could say that Monogamy is the better choice in the long run as this is what allowed us to build a stable society, which is now getting put under stress by the Women returning to their Poly ways.

And from what I can see the patience of the builders of Society (Men) is slowly coming to an end.
