You can do both. Most of us would exist in state #2, but if you need help with something, get sick or have a serious problem, then state #1 applies. That's why learning to be self-sufficient and solving problems is something men tend to be more capable of than women, whereas women are far better at complaining and bringing their problems to someone's attention.

Some people might whinge and say that's sexist... whatever. In today's world, as a trend it certainly rings true.

It is liberating: society does not care about you, so you owe society nothing. You are cannon fodder, grist for the mill, bones for the broth if you let them. You ARE disposable, a commodity to be used up and then discarded like Animal Farm's Boxer. The difference is, you know it, and thus with clear conscience owe no one anything, let alone the theoretical construct "society".

That doesn't give license to be a monster, but it damn sure doesn't give responsibility to be a hero. There's enough of those at Arlington to last for eternity.

I used to have problems with this mindset for years. But over the last year ive really come to embrace that people I was sad not caring dont care. Leaves me free to not worry about the stupid situations they get in nor do I have to worry about helping them out something they wouldnt do in return. Alot more freeing for me this way.
