There's a bunch of guys here, mainly anti-authority types that will tell you fuck the military. I'm not one of them. The military is what you make it. I've been in the Army since 2004, including a combat deployment to Iraq '07-08. I love the Army, I wouldn't change it for the world.

That being said, you must protect yourself. When we deployed, my platoon had 14 married men. One man didn't make it home, and we had 11 divorces. That was fuckin' eye-opening. Most of the married NCOs wound up back in the barracks quick, and drunk as fuck on the weekends. Not that I blame them, they were financially ruined, one and all. My squad leader came home to a sold motorcycle, a house in foreclosure and divorce papers on the kitchen table. And he was a goddamned good man, one of the best I've ever known.

Stay the fuck away from the split-tails in the military. They are walking rape accusations waiting to happen. Do your job, find some hobbies, and stay the fuck away from females at all costs.

In the same situation although I'm 21 years old. I had a chance to go to another country, live my life to the fullest. Then suddenly fell in love, says "I don't feel the same". Bitch, please. Perfect time to learn this lesson. The military is a meritocracy so work hard, get your quals, promote right on past the other guys who make decisions based on the pussy. Also, never be alone with a female in any environment. I can't tell you how many times I've seen substandard women claim harassment/assault to get out of trouble for being shitty at their job. One accusation can derail your entire career.

As mistakes go, this was fairly minor one, and something that you can correct (moving, at least post-service, is easy). What you need to make sure you avoid is: fatherhood, marriage, comingling of finances, and cohabitation. That is the bare minimum. Many here go further and eschew long term relationships, or even casual dating. More extreme still, many abstain from sex, or engage only under very narrow conditions (e.g. with a pro in Southeast Asia) to mitigate MeToo risks given what's going on.

As for lifestyle/strategy, people here are of one of three minds, and only you can decide which works for you:

Money-making maximization, because money creates choices.
Leisure-maximization, where you work only as much as is necessary to support a comfortable lifestyle with enough left over for a margin of error, because time is the only thing you can't get more of.
System avoidance by moving off the grid or becoming a welfare bum because you don't want to pay into a system that acts as a redistribution mechanism primarily benefiting women, especially worthless single mothers.
