Our educational system is built on the Prussian model. Its intended goal was to break people's spirits and crush independent thought, in order to make better soldier's / factory workers.
If the goal was to encourage independent thought, creative thinking, and educate people... why destroy the old system of a classical Trivium education and replace it with this.
The Trivium was about teaching people how to read, how to think logically, and how to argue their points of view. Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric.
The Prussian system is about conformity. If you step out of line, you're disciplined. If you say something the teacher doesn't like, you're disciplined. When the teacher asks a question that you don't know the answer to, you do not think of the answer yourself. You wait patiently for the teacher to provide the answer for you. You do not question this answer, you memorize it as gospel truth. It will be on the test later.
Only recently was the physical abuse option removed from public schools to enforce order.
The goal is to systematically destroy people's ability to think for themselves. To train them to defer to authority like one of Pavlov's dogs.
Now, the people running this machine have no idea what it was designed to do and are fucking everything up, but the machine doesn't care. It continues to perform as designed.

How efficient is it to take children from the ages of 5-18, and then force them to sit in a chair for 6 hours a day staring at a chalkboard?
K-12 is a massive time investment. Does it really take 15,600 hours to teach a child to read, write, and perform basic math?
No.

Ideally, yes.
I was educated in one of the worst (read: poorest, highest percentage of ESL immigrants) school districts in the US.
When I was a Freshman in High School, California instituted an exit exam for all students. My graduation year (2004) would be the first year students would be denied their diploma without passing the exit exam.
The exam was given twice a year, each year, for all of high school (8 times). I passed the test as a Freshman the first time I took it.
My class of Freshman was 1,000 kids. My "graduating" class four years later was 200 kids. Of those 200 kids, only 100 passed the High School exit exam I'd passed Freshman year.
What the fuck did those other children learn from being in High School?
What did the curriculum do for them?
As for me? The curriculum taught me nothing. Everything I learned was self study.
At the time, I believed High School was a form of daycare. It wasn't until I learned of the origins of the Prussian system that I realized how malicious it was.

When I was a middle school student in the US, we used to have something called "pep rallies". Attendance was mandatory. We would sit in bleachers and do, no shit, choreographed cheers for whichever school athletic team had a game coming up. Like perfect little patriotic citizens.
Stuff like that was so obviously bullshit it made me identify with the slackers and thugs and nerds.
