STEM, or a trade. If you are int he US and can help it, look into work-study programs. With those, instead of a loan you get a low rent job with the school. Kinda sucks at the time, but later on when your making bank and listening to others bitch about loan repayment it's cool.

Consider the military and GI Bill. Then work your way through college as much as possible. Do college part time and get as few loans as possible. Only go to college if you're going into a specific field like STEM, medicine, law, architecture, that kind of thing.

Everything else is college is just bullshit to attract stupid people and pay lots of money to, say, learn Russian Literature or Renaissance Art.

Literally sitting at my commencement ceremony right now actually. BS in Biology, and going back for Finance (AAS or BS, haven’t decided for sure) while I study for entrance exams for graduate school.

Paid as I went. No loans due, and I’ll do it again as I do the absolute best I can for me. That way I won’t be looked at as some loser guy by anyone or myself, and my niece & nephews hopefully get some good example out of it later

BS in Bio here; didn’t go medical route. Went environmental route. Did field research. Alaska. Desert. Gulf South.

Now work for an environmental contracting firm in FL. Always getting to travel and repair and improve exotic locations for future generations.

Another option is one, and only one, tour of duty in the military.

The GI bill pays for four years of schooling and gives you money to survive on while attending classes.

And youll have the opportunity to sock away some paychecks while you are serving.

Just be careful about your choice of branch and specialty.

If I had it to do over, I'd be a plumber/electrician/HVAC. You have tools and a van with your number on it. Desperate people call you and give you money to fix their issues. If you encounter an asshole who is a pain to work for, you put them on a People I Don't Call Back list.

Go into sales. I majored in psychology and planned on going to grad school and medical school then I got into sales and made more money than I would with a masters. my loans that were supposed to take 10 years to pay off I’ll have paid off next year.

Depending on your interests, engineering, CS, medicine, or finance/accounting will be your best bets. For everything except for medicine, you can immediately work with just a Bachelor's and doctors get paid so much that if you do have to take out a loan, you can easily pay it back within 10 years if you live well below your means.

I took college prep courses when I was in HS, and had plenty of credits to be able to get into college, but realized my senior year that my parents didn't have the money to send me anywhere and I had no marketable skills to go out and get a meaningful job. So I joined the military. I learned a skill, served my country, fulfilled my contract, signed up for another, and then the Gulf War came along and ruined my health. I fought with the VA for almost TWO DECADES getting the disability I was due. I'm glad I served, and if I had it all to do over, I'd do it again (except I would put AT LEAST one tenth of every paycheck into some form of long-term savings, like mutual fund or money market account or even certificates of deposit or 10 year savings bonds.) But that's only if I were doing it all over in the same time in my country's history. Today, no thank you. Today the military is a gynocentric, misandrist Petri dish. Moreover, today's liberals seem to insist Trump must go to war with Russia and Korea (he's certainly NOT to be allowed to make peace with them), and if they get their way (God Forbid!) the military is going to be doing all the grunt work... you should pardon the expression. IOW, I would not recommend to MY son or grandson or nephew that he enlist. Just FYI.

The real question you should be asking is what do you want to be doing for at least 40 hours a week? You need to figure out what you want to do before you go to college. It’s very possible you’ll decide to do something that doesn’t even require a college education.

My mom had a cousin who took out about $30k in loans and ended up owing close to $100k with late fees and interest. She was livng at home not paying any bills and still couldnt even get a part time job to at the very least pay off the interest.

As for what to do, my advice is as I have seen alot of other users say is STEM, finance, business, medicine, or the trades

Pre-undergrad summer, I'd say you should travel abroad (self/fun) or do a short topical-based study abroad with your chosen school. Knock some general credits out the way; make some friends; lessen your first year load (with, come on, in most cases, a "gimme A", which monumentally helps with your first-year options). I found out much after the fact my undergrad institution hosted 100 odd short 2- to 10- week "fun" study programs such as "science in the desert" and "marine biology in the Great Lakes".
Undergrad of Computer Science and Mathematics, Economics, Finance, or Physics. Study abroad at least 6 to 18 months.
Get an Air Force Reserve contract with a TS/SCI clearance with GSA. Cybersecurity is optimal. ROTC is great but not a requirement. Second is Navy. Third is Army. Do NOT go Marines! (I fucked up and decided to Hooah)
Be sure to work as much as you can during school. Try to constantly get more serious jobs, even if it is difficult or the terms are, at first glance, obscenely demanding.
Maybe spend one summer tops as a "free summer" during undergrad. Summers are meant for work, networking, and studying abroad or extra certifications; or even studying ahead, thesis composition, etc.
Make sure you graduate top 10% in your school if it is an Ivy. Otherwise, you really need to be in the top 3 to 5%.
Graduate school of a dual degree of any of the following: MD, JD, MBA, M. ENG, M. COMP SCI.

6a. Optional - work 1 or 2 years full time at a "big boy job" between steps #5 and #6.

6b. Optional, II - developing and collaborating on side giga is great, but be reasonable and practical. And be focused above all.

Extra notes: cut out bad influences. I bombed my first year of college due to them. I took more credit hours consisting of much harder classes in my second year while juggling two jobs and two university research editorial positions. I scored mostly As and A-s. The difference is huge. A few years of pain and focus is the difference between you getting the appropriate interviews, skills, connection, and reputation or not.

Extra notes, cont.: no matter what anyone says, plan and focus diligently. Make plans and stick to them. Endeavor to be exceptional, not passing.

Extra notes, cont.: pick up at least two critical foreign languages, and move toward fluency as soon as possible.

Extra notes, cont.: read for fun; read outside your field; read all the required readings; read the extra readings; and take initiative to read beyond the immediately discernible field. As a scholar and practitioner, the results and doors are night and day.

Extra notes, cont.: be strategic about how you spend your time. Indeed not everything is worth learning or doing. However, half-assing anything you are doing is pure jackassery.

I study computer science and I can recommend it. Be warned that you have to really put effort in during the semester and got no time for partying.
