You're still young enough to make a go of it in the military, have a career, retire, and start another career. Good for you.

I would consider the Air Force as well, unless you really REALLY want the Navy. Then absolutely go for it.

You can come out at 50 with a pension and start another career. I wish I'd done it that way. Truly.

Not in the military but I have some advice. 29 is super young. If you’re not happy with what you’re currently doing and want something different I would say do it. Maybe wait a month to see if you still want to try it out but I would say joining the military would have nothing but benefits if you don’t have anything going on at home

Ex-Navy here (American). I’m going to assume you’re American because that’s all I know.

I’ve seen guys join at around your age. Get in good physical shape and do well on your ASVAB, which will open a lot of opportunities up to you. Get a technical rate (job), that will open employment opportunities if you decide to get out of the Navy.

It’s a lot of work. You don’t have a set schedule. You go home for the day when your chief or superior officer tells you to. The lifestyle can be overwhelming and exhausting but fun as hell if you love traveling and spontaneity.

Go and study for your pilots license. Get some hours under your belt then apply to an airline. Travel the world. Sleep with stewardesses (not from your country ala child support laws) and women from other countries.

There's a shortage of pilots.

Was in the Navy. Great experience. I have recently spoken with 2 older gentlemen who are also Navy vets, both of them used their training outside of the Navy and had long successful careers until they retired.

The Navy will introduce you to new things, people, and places and will change who you are.

When you get out you will be a better man than you were before you went in.

There will be things that are tough, and things you will not like, but such is life.

Make sure you get a good job along the lines of something you are interested in before you. Talk to the recruiter about the different jobs available. Some are great, some not so great. Some will send you to school for a while, some will send you right to a ship.

Joined at 18 and went subs. Was so excited to go in and was so excited to get out. I will say I went in one of best fields so even without a college diploma, it set my motivation and career on best path possible. Have an awesome career and set my life and on a great path.

I didnt have direction at 18, prob would failed out of failed college and best thing that ever happened to me. It’s a great path to get started in life, get ass kicked to help steer you and serve. Even if don’t know how to do something will do my best to learn for myself, am that guy where someone says “you can’t do that” says bullshit, I’m gonna fucking give it a go, fail figure out how to do it better. Have been to good number of places and is a great country to live and support

If you choose go best field you can. Does it guarantee your future, no as you are the driving force for yourself. It won’t be easy no matter what you do. Dont know what you do for a living but being honest and blunt - you are in charge of yourself. Bored ask yourself why, mundane job. How to to improve or find a job you want , not enough college, go to some classes or tech school to learn something new or for fun, take fucking charge of yourself . Feeling down go for long bike ride, excursive, lift weights as exercise makes you feel so much better even not in shape and keep at it even when it’s hard and fucking sucks. When it’s for you, nobody can take that away from you

Find better job, make improvements to yourself, coding to make tasks quicker, volunteer to do additional activities to get what you want, better at excel analysis, where do you need improvement, find different job or sometimes becoming the best fucking guy in your Dept or job. You are in charge of your decisions, response and path in life

Full disclosure i've never served but was always fascinated with the prospect of joining.

I've now met many different vets and heard the stories and I can say that I no longer have the itch to join. If you want to do it great, but i'll tell you the things that made me shy away.

The best way i've heard it put to me was "Understand that the further away you get from combat, the more political and buraeucratic bullshit you will have to deal with" In combat units, this shit doesn't fly because competence keeps people alive, so only the competent will succeed and move up. Not so much the case in rear echelon positions.

The leaders in the military have an interest in diversity due to the government being the way it is, You will see females getting away with murder and getting promoted for it. It's in the best interest of the officer in charge to give high marks to the females underneath them, for one, it tamps down on the #Metoo accusations and also it makes themselves look like a more competent manager.

If I were you I would go binge watch Terrence Popp videos, He was Army, not Navy, and the 2 are different but they will have mostly similar issues. He will give stories and examples of extreme favoritism in the military. If you think you can deal with the bullshit then go for it, because it certainly has it's benefits, and Popp covers those aswell.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for those who served, i'm just letting you know what turned me off from it.

I would suggest marine or army infantry. At 29, you should be physically and mentally superior to most 18 and 19 year olds and should do very well and end up in leadership positions.

I'm 43, i'm now a successful Software Developer, but my life was hard with a period of homelessness before I made something of my life.

I swear this is the honest truth, if I could go back to being 18 again i'd sign up with the Navy today. Travel the world, camaraderie, a roof over my head, 3 square meals a day and a good pension

I'm 23 and also have the urge to join.

Both my mother and father were Navy, mother left after 2 years and father stayed for 21 before retiring. All my family has been military.

Here's the thing... I feel as if War is a cyclical process, as in, the powers at be (whoever they are), start wars at various times to make money and thin the population.

The goal, at least for me, is to join and complete either a tour or retirement before a war happens and you get killed.

Choosing a MOS that transfers well into the civilian sector is a must, none of that infantry bullshit. You WILL be serving THIS society and those who have power over it... i.e. a gynocentric society that could care less about what you want to do much less your life as a man. The military does have its benefits (G.I. Bill, nice permanent pension), but you're playing a game of musical chairs when you know a war is inevitably going to occur. Best have really good luck or be in a mission - critical position so your ass doesn't get shipped and killed.

Just my inexperienced $0.02.

Army (28). I’d suggest only joining as an officer or warrant officer only unless you wanna get treated like a child by someone maybe 3-5 years older than you. If you can secure a pilot slot I’d go for it. The Army is hurting for helicopter pilots and the airlines are so short of pilots they’ll pay for tour training to get there after.
