Honestly I have never heard of this but was thinking about this myself recently.
I had noticed with past partners that once the threaten to break up or something they go crazy for you. Not sure about the 4 years though seen as my ex did it every year or so.
Even if it did work it would get to a point where they are old and unattractive anyway.

I feel like "I would never " expresses that the thought not only doesn't enter their mind but they are emphasizing they are incapable of the thought . I mean how many guys have said " I never knew she was capable of this" only to be ripped apart ? It's almost to say that the mere thought of cheating is impossible for them.
"I will never" expresses a sense of dedication , a commitment to an ideal , a sense of responsibility , it's a declaration . Declarations and hard limits are the modern womans kryptonite , they want infinite choices and infinite options . To say that she will never cheat on her boyfriend is her claiming inversely that she is only set on the happiness her boyfriend can give her and when Mr. perfect is always seemingly right around the corner ( somehow just barely out of grasp of every womans reach) why would she ever commit to an idea like that?
Tldr; " I would never" is nothing more than an ideal or thought , " I will never" is a statement of commitment.

I agree, but it's a bit amusing in my opinion that they're not even good at lying about it. I mean if you really wanted to lie, you would have said will never cheat. But by saying would it's like somewhere in between, like keeping her options open for an excuse like "omg u don't have time for me anymore or pay me attention or i felt lonely".
