When did the meaning of respect change so much, and why does it anger me so much. No one inherently deserves respect it can only be earned.

What is the definition of respect? To me respect is deferring your own thoughts/actions to another due to a position of authority. Parents, police, muggers, rattlesnakes, system experts, bomb squads, teachers, and your boss all should be receiving some respect. The only respect I give to strangers is the same as that given to rattlesnakes, be wary they may strike.

Respect is not kindness or courtesy or love. I can respect the power a dumb*** boss may have over me while in no way being any more considerate than what is required to keep my job.

The statement that everyone deserves respect makes me see red and I wish it would go away.
