Women have always needed the protection of the group at large. By offering her husbands labor, she gets to vicariously give back to the community that she would expect to protect her if something happened to hubby - basically opens up her network of people willing to do things for HER as repayment for her husbands labor, since she shares his name.

When I was married, my wife insisted I take the bus to work because she needed the car to pick up the kids or go to job interviews, which was fine by me because by taking the bus I could read or even nap on my way to work. First huge snowfall of the year on a weekday I carried on to the bus stop without shoveling the driveway. When I got to work my phone was ringing--it was my wife demanding to know why I didn't shovel the driveway. I very calmly replied "I don't use the car...the driveway can be covered in snow until spring and it wouldn't matter to me. By the way, the shovel is in the garage." I have to mention here that I hate shoveling snow...I pay a service to clear my driveway the whole winter.
