I remember when the masculine form was the linguistic default. It wasn't "sexist" - it was just the way the English language worked... you have to have some method of assigning pronouns, and that way is as good as any and better than most. Other languages more-or-less arbitrarily assign genders (why are windows feminine in Spanish and neuter in German, for example?) But people started to equate "gender" (which is linguistic) with "sex" (which is biological), and suddenly everyday discourse became a battleground in which hypersensitive people got offended. For a while there was an open debate about whether to use "he/she" or "s/he" (I'm not making that up - it was even in English-class textbooks for a while), but both of those are unwieldy, so the new standard is "they" - which leaves the listener/reader confused about whether the subject is singular or plural.
The newest trend seems to be to use feminine pronouns as the default (for things that are good/strong/laudable), which leads to absurdities such as, "When a soldier goes into combat she must carry 80 pounds of gear," despite the fact that 86% of soldiers are men, and approximately 100% of the soldiers who carry 80 pounds into combat are men.
The linguistic change is to force people into different thought patterns, wherein good things are associated with feminine pronouns (and thus females), while bad things are associated with masculine pronouns (and thus males). They've already been remarkably successful: ask a random group of people what they envision when you say the phrase "domestic violence" and the vast majority will imagine a violent male abusing a female victim, even though the converse is more likely to be true.
That's one of the reasons I refuse to use the word "gender" when referring to biological sex. One of my professors in grad school got very upset with me about my steadfast refusal to use the linguistically-incorrect word "gender"... he even threatened me with a failing grade, even though I was carrying a 4.0 average up to that point and had a real shot at being the valedictorian. I, in turn, tried to get him fired for being 1) wrong, and 2) a bully. The dean had to intervene, and forced an uneasy truce, although not before I essentially told the dean that he was a coward and the professor that he was an idiot.
I graduated, but the B+ I got from him meant I was out of the running to be the valedictorian. Oh well... it's not like anybody really cares what you did in college once you're out, anyway.
