Good on you. I booked my first solo holiday overseas and I can't wait to go. No arguing about what to do first, where to eat, who's tired or bored. Just me and MY demands. Bliss.

Can't recommend solo travel enough: It has been the greatest source of enjoyment and evolution in my life. I was scared and unsure, and I still am each time, but the rewards have always been unexpected, immense, and long-lasting.

Each time, friends and family, who do little (or no) traveling have done everything to discourage me. It is true what they say: If you start to change, those closest to you will try to stop you because they do not want to be reminded of their own shortcomings or failures.

When I've including a woman in a trip to someplace I am really excited about I've regretted it - they did nothing but slow me down and distract me.

Be prepared for no one being as excited about this as you are. I went to amazing places, saw amazing things, and met amazing people and no one back home cared. They never wanted to see the pictures, and when I tried to share, they were unenthusiastic in the way that implies you are unwelcome to continue. This was one of the big signs that I was in the wrong social groups and I needed to distance myself from my own family.

I enjoy the planning phase and schedule each day out with things/places that I am curious about. It gives structure to the experience that I need in order to explore the new places. I never make it to everything, but that gives me a reason to go back.

I've driven across the country two and a half times. One and a half of those was just driving along the 10, almost from end to end. Drove through the Rockies once (on the 15, I think). Crazy pretty.

It'll be good for you. You'll see how people live in different areas, how we're all different, and how we're all the same. You'll see just how much open dirt there is across the US. You'll have time to spend in your own head, free from distractions. If you see a a sign that says "XXXXX 100 miles on left", fucking go. That's how I saw Devil's Tower (because Close Encounters).

It may be tedious at times, but in the end, you'll be glad you did it. Enjoy.

But, booking? All you need is a car. Unless you don't want to put 10k miles on your car in a week.
