I mean can you blame them? Even Epictetus, one of the most renowned philosophers of Roman times talked about this. He said, stay moderate. Show that even with bare necessities you maintain a healthy body and mind. Don’t look like a bum otherwise you will never inspire thought in others because they won’t even consider your points.

I thought that was diogenes? Wasnt he the one who was homeless, made fun of everyone, lived in a barrel, and owned only a cloak and a staff? but yet, his philosophy as a cynic was the longest lasting of all the greek philosophies due to how well he made it look. He made sure to never look to weak, he didnt work out to look strong, and he made sure to never look pathetic. He made homelessness into the bees knees of styles in his day.

I’m sure Epictetus drew from Diogenes. But I haven’t read any of Diogenes works so I can’t say... But yes. Appearances matter. Philosophers knew that. Heck. Religions know that today.
Unless you can gain access to a persons mind for him to listen to you, your points can be valid as fuck but he won’t be open to considering it unless he feels he relates

the reason why you havent read diogenes work, is because he never wrote anything. Everything known about diogenes is through his peers who wrote about him. His legacy was born only through rumor or admiration of others. Diogenes most famous moment was when Alexander the great went to see diogenes, and after talking with him for a length of time, asked diogenes, " Out of everything in my power to give you, what would you like?" Diogense asked if the conqueror would step a bit to the side, that the conquerer was blocking a homeless mans sunlight. While walking away, alexander told his aide, "if I wasnt Alexander, I would have been diogenes" And diogenes called back, "if I wasnt Diogense, I would still be Diogenes!"
Alexander was taught by the aristotle himself. Arguably the smartest man of that era. But still, Alexander was so impressed with diogenes the cynic, that he was willing to give him his empire. but the old man in a trash can asked for him to step aside. Truly an amazing man.
