First of all, let me preface this post by saying that I'm generally in favour of self-improvement. I think that ourselves and the world at large benefits when we become better men. I'm talking about thngs like taking care of your physical and mental health, spending less money than you earn, and maintaining a tidy living space. All of these things positive.
What I'm asking is at what point does an obsession with self-improvement go too far? I was sitting down the other day writing out a list of things I could do or recommend to make life better in 2021. Then it struck me that most of the things I had written on the list were what Nassim Taleb (the author of Antifragile) would describe as Via Negativa, or the process of making things better by removing some element rather than adding something new. Some of the things I thought about removing were related to self-improvement.
Self-Improvement is nothing new, of course. After all, fad diets to help people look better have been around for decades. Although in recent years there does seem to have been an explosion in the amount of self-improvement material out there. It's reached the ridiculous stage where people offering a program costing hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars can afford to turn potential clients away with a marketing schtick of "One of my staff will call you to determine if you're worthy of being on this program".
I feel into this myself with the whole "nofap" craze a few years back. I'll admit I was watching more porn than I should have been, but the answer wasn't to go and pay some guy a few hundred dollars to tell me that the whole thing is outside my control (because, silly man, you would have stopped already if you could have on your own), or that I could have some dubious side "benefit" (like lots of hot chicks) if I follow his program. The answer was to take a step back, focus on the goals that matter to me, and let those become my focus.
The other issue with "self-improvement" material is, of course, that it reinforces the idea that, as present, I am not good enough, or that I am deficient in some way. The nofap thing is actually a really good example of this. A guy joins that because he's watching too much porn and it's distracting him from his goals. Then he reads the "benefits" that others claim to be receiving. Suddenly he now feels deficient because he doesn't have a six-pack, or six different women in his bed every week, or a seven figure salary or whatever.
So of course, this guy starts chasing the six pack abs or the six different women each week. But because his heart isn't really in it (after all, they weren't his intended goals), he doesn't do as well as some of the others. He now becomes depressed, thinking he's somehow inferior to everyone else because he isn't enjoying the same success. Meanwhile, his real goals, the things that matter to him are being left behind all the time.
I have decided that 2021 is going to be the year I cut a lot of shit out of my life. No more will I waste time on YouTube videos related to nofap, or self-improvement, or PUA, or Red Pill or any of that stuff. Not unless I have something I specifically want to resolve, or just need some quick entertainment. They just don't resonate with my goals. Ironically, since giving up on the whole nofap/pornfree thing, I'm spending less time watching porn anyway, and have pretty much lost all desire to seek out escorts (I once considered that an addiction too). I'm going to focus on a few things related to what I want to achieve, and that's it. Some of those goals aren't possible right now as COVID has made international travel impossible, but I can still get ready for when it becomes possible again.
So what is your take on this? Should we constantly seek any kind of self-improvement we can? Should we just say "fuck it" and not bother at all? Should we seek a path somewhere in the middle, picking one or two things we can work on and focusing only on those? Is self-improvement largely mental masturbation, where a man sits at home dreaming of what he might one day become, but never takes any action?
What do you think?
