You often hear of dumbasses who get mail order brides.

Be aware that for several of the countries that this is a popular method of wealth acquisition for families in those countries. They essentially pimp out a daughter with the understanding that she will pressure the husband to buy land or assets in the home country.

For several of the countries, such as phillipines, thailand, or china, the mail order bride is your "permission" to buy land in her home country and all assets will be registered in her name.

If you split, she keeps it all.

Don't assume someone is agreeing to marry someone from the other side of the planet for love.

Any government in the world does not want to have to subsidize an adult person. These laws are in place so they can ensure that a private citizen, usually the man, will subsidize the life of a woman. While most of the instances happen to be about gender, look at rich Hollywood actresses who have to pay alimony and child support to their ex partners who were less than successful. It’s always an unfair system for the higher earner. Food for thought.

Yeah, I live in Texas and am dating a Colombian. When I mentioned how screwed up divorce law was in Texas, she said it was worse in Colombia.

In general, what I have found is that Latin America has the same feminist rules as USA, but they are not as rigidly enforced. In this case, I suspect had the man here gotten a lawyer who has this judge paid off, the ruling would not have been the same.

Someone who has lived in the USA and abroad said the corruption is just as bad in the USA as Latin America, it is just better hidden in the USA.

Lol my dad brought his wife (my stepmom) from a foreign nation (not going to mention) he had COVID and she willingly let him die. She didn’t call 9/11 or anything. When I confronted her about she said she didn’t know what 9/11 was. 2nd day after his death she was trying to get her green card issue resolved. On the 24th day she cleared his bank account (approximately 60k) and now she’s trying to get the house. My dad has an estate that is less than 100k so the law says he gets everything even if he excluded her. It’s been about 3 months since the whole thing happened. Sometimes you roll with the punches and stay far away. Funny thing about a year before he passed away he said me that I told him not to get married because it wouldn’t solve his happiness.

That's called domestic partnership. In my US state we don't have that law. But, many, many do. Don't live with her.

In Canada even that won't keep you safe.

Welcome to China where you can keep everything if not getting married. There’s no such thing as alimony either. Even child support is not mandatory in practice, and usually the parent with more money can get custody. Two years ago a guy was given custody even if he did not marry the mother of his son, because he is richer.

Yes it is insane. What proportion of effort did she supply to grow the money for those three houses? If she contributed anything at all it is probably closer to 0.1%.

I understand that the cohabitation laws exist for a reason. But they should be taking the time invested into account. A short period like 2-5 years should only allow a tiny portion of the other partners assets to be taken.

If someone has been together through thick or thin from before either had any assets for 30+ years then yes I can understand how it is fair to split things as they were built up together.

Even better - do not get married and do not cohabitate. But obviously lots of people seem unable to retain that and get sucked in by the plantation.

Common law marriage, it's pretty common around the world, and exists in many states in the US as well. Basically, if the court determines that you've lived "like man and wife", then you'll be treated as if you were married. Exact conditions vary, in some places you pretty much have to refer to each other as husband and wife and present yourself as a family, in others a bit of cohabitation is all it takes. And then we have that Canadian dude who spent a bit of time in a summer home with his gf every year, but otherwise lived separately, who ended up being treated as if they were married.

Other places in Europe have explicit rules for co-habitation that are essentially "marriage lite" that kick in much quicker than outright common law marriage, but where you're at least not on the hook for 50% straight across the line. Though if you, e.g., buy a house while together, or just about anything else you get for your common home, your partner will end up with half of it if you separate.

The only way to win is not to play....
