Interesting read, and my heart goes out to this man.

Interesting to note, that nowhere in the article, does he describe or even acknowledge the multiple functions of the foreskin; nor that "circumcision" is simply male genital mutilation.

[–]needletothebar 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

actually, he does address all of those things, but he does so in a very subtle way that gets the reader to think and come to those conclusions themselves. it's genius.

I’m not sure about that. Even the title of the whole piece is deliberately misleading. Every single circumcision is “botched”.

[–]needletothebar 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

i don't know that that's really true. if somebody intends to poke your eye out and they successfully poke your eye out, was the blinding "botched"?

[–]TheEthnicityOfASpoon 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It’s an interesting discussion.

The exactitude of the language is very important. The article is about a so-called “medical” procedure, and implying it can be “botched” gives validity to this “medical” procedure.

ie: It implies the “medical” procedure can be done correctly. But of course it’s not a medical procedure in the first place, it’s child sex abuse and male genital mutilation.

There are of course a tiny number of cases, where a true medical circumcision is required, but this article is not about that

circumcision is not a medical procedure and cannot ever be required. i don't think that means it's "botched", though.

I was circumsized as a kid, and all I wish was that I got a choice in the matter, but none of it was my choice, if I had the option, I would have not gotten it done

[–]AxalonNemesis 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I never got a choice. Born in 1981 and had my foreskin removed before they even figured out if I was going to need a blood transfusion or not.

I never would have gotten it done.

My uncle used to tell me about his when I was younger because it was messed up. I guess they cut to much off or something (cant remember the details). I know he said it ripped when he got hard, and he made sure I got extra (that's what he says but I never verified, I do have more then most though).

Sigh why should someone else get to decide how much you get??

“I’m cut and I’m happier this way.” Alright well you’re just saying that. Welcome to 2021, it’s time to start googling shit and thinking for yourself.

how would you know?

why do you think you'd be insecure about having a whole penis with no missing parts?

have you ever been ashamed about having a glans? or about having two testicles?

[–]Algoresball[🍰] 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you were uncut, you’d be able to make the choice to become cut. I have no problem with adult men who chose to mutilate themselves. Do what you want to your body. But what it indefensible is doing it to baby boys who have no power to object

[–]disayle32 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It was your body and it should have been your choice.

[–]Greg_W_Allan 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I’m happier this way

Complete and utter non sequitur.

Glad you are OK with with it.

The point is genital mutilation should never be forced on anyone and done without express informed consent. A lot of people are pointing out that it doesn't have medical benefit, and is in fact in many cases harmful.

Simple grammatical observation. "Happier" implies you have a base line for comparison. You do not. Your statement is a nonsense in that form.

No wrongthink involved apart from not recognising the sentiment around you. Not at all unusual for blokes to make such statements but I do wonder what motivates it when it should be obvious it won't be welcomed.
