This subject is petty as fuck.

This subject is very important and requires our utmost attention. Someone call the President so he can veto this movie!

Don't forget that in the "This is Spinal Tap" entry you can vote upto ELEVEN!

Is the movie even out yet? I would imagine only screeners saw it so far.

I can't see it being either a 10 or a 1... The distribution just isn't there for that.

It's just a political statement.

IMDB demographics show overwhelming vote-rigging by people abusing the rating system.

Who is doing this, and what do they hope to accomplish? I know opposing camps of movie nerds are fighting over it but vote manipulation via 5000 users smells more like the work of political actors.

Nobody previously bought the line that MRAs just happened to dislike the movie on artistic grounds, and now they will feel there is hard proof of butt-hurt. The MRM is going to be blamed for this regardless of who it was, because MRAs have been butting in to feminist discussions on the movie to explain why they think it is a bad movie. Obviously it is a topic of significance to us, and feminists are already scornful about that.

5000 users, 55.5% of votes scored it 1 out of 10. For ages 18-29, females gave 7.6, males gave 3.6.

For comparison I Googled "chick flick" and checked the rating ratio on the first five movies that popped up. They had about 10% - 18% difference in score between M and F, just in case anyone thinks the difference of more than double could be natural.

I didn't like either GB movie or the new trailer so I don't have a dog in this fight, it is just sad the MRM is seen as insecure boys throwing a tantrum because the girls wanted to do something without us.
(OMG they shot a guy in the dick and now girls are laughing at that and I'm scared some crazy girl is going to start shooting guys in the dick for real on the way home from the cinema and other girls will just stand around and laugh while my dick bleeds to death.!!!)

I understand the disappointment of seeing something you love exploited or done badly - the last two Alien movies pissed me off. But I didn't see corrupting a useful movie rating demographic system as a suitable response.

It was gamed in both directions. It just had more gaming on the bottom end. All you're seeing is a movie that was turned into an ideological crux point, so people voted ideologically. There's always the defense that even with all that visible gaming, in both directions, only 6600 people ultimately chose to vote with their genitalia and ideology. Given the media attention on this one, the ideological response being that low is actually surprising.

Edit: But, in the end, are you really surprised? You're looking at voting on a movie that is released tomorrow to theaters, so most of those votes are people who have not seen the movie and there's less than 10K votes all told.

Look at the voting on Mad Max: Fury Road as a comparison point. Despite all the media attention, and visibly ideological voting and commentary you can find if you dig, the sheer numbers of ordinary people that voted (500K+) eventually watered down and drowned the ideological camps. The same should happen with Ghostbusters.

The IMDB algorithm will deal with all this. As a growing number of people give it regular ratings, then the outliners will be given less weight, until they will be ignored altogether.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. The algorithm just speeds up the natural progression to the average, so this is only a matter of waiting. It will fix itself.

[–]Consilio_et_Animis 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. It speeds it up as soon as it can see that the outliners are really not going to representative and never were. And that will happn even quicker when it can see a large number of both very high and very low ratings. If you want to skew the results, you are much better giving it a 4 or 5 rating say.

This is very interesting. Average age of IMDB accounts (not age of voters) and how they voted:

5000 gave 1
1700 gave 10
74% of votes were either 1 or 10, i.e. fake.

Presumably they are doing similar stuff on other sites, with the intention of costing the studio money as punishment for making a movie that says things they don't like. And something tells me the haters are the kind of people who tend to use the phrase "free speech" a lot and tell people to harden up if they are offended by media.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

5000 gave 1

1700 gave 10

Yep, it's almost like the movie was aimed firmly in a specific direction, had sexist takes on male characters, was marketed as a grrrl power flick, and ended with a grand nut shot joke that's pretty unmistakable. You think perhaps, that while there are ideologues in every camp, that if you make a movie targeting a certain demographic, that the aggrieved demographic might see a tad more ideological activity?

Flip this around ... you and I make a male reboot of Thelma and Louise. Two men are in unfulfilling, dead end relationships filled with casual sexism and negative female tropes like a gold digging, manipulative wife and a welfare Momma girlfriend that hasn't worked in years, but still wants to be catered to. They both leave. They encounter a female rapist and shoot her to stop her raping one of the men. They encounter all sorts of offputting, manipulative women that cement their dislike of the gender, and in fleeing justice for the shooting, they decide to kill themselves rather than go to jail.

Do you think men or women would be more outraged with a reboot of that kind of classic, made in this vein? Probably women, right? Do you think the female ideologues would be all over that movie, panning it? Probably.

What you're seeing is a natural human reaction to their demographic being pointedly singled out for negative attention.

74% of votes were either 1 or 10, i.e. fake.

That's an artifact of the timing. Before release date you're talking a) people with an actual "in" with the studio and an advance screening, or b) people pretending they have a). If you take your snapshot of the voting before the public legitimately gets a chance to weigh in, you're guaranteed to see skewed voting. How skewed will depend on how controversial the movie is and this was the most controversial in quite some time.

[–]JebberJabber[S] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I understand people are upset, but from a PR point of view it is a very bad look for the MRM for the fake vote ratio to be three times higher on our side. Civilised people don't do that sort of shit, it is hypocritical for a movement which claims to be seeking a better society to deliberately poison one of its foundations - accurate statistics.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's 4500 people ... seriously, the movie was promoted nationwide, articles were written in national reach blogs, online magazines and newspapers. The percentage of people who voted in this fashion vs. the people that were exposed to the story is a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of a percent.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill, and in only a couple of days, that voting pattern will be effectively wiped.

[–]TBFProgrammer 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Votes skew heavily towards both 1s and 10s (with there simply being more ideologically motivated to score a 1 than a 10). Looking at other movies on the site, this is an aberration.
