You're in a Divorce Law class and you've never heard of alimony before? You don't understand one of the concepts taught in that class, so you're asking reddit for an explanation?

The best way to think about it is like a contract.

In the event of a breach of contract, there are generally penalties, right?

However, family law has the penalties set up against whomever makes the most money (is the primary provider). Behaviour doesn't seem to have much effect on what happens, especially with no-fault divorce. It is just a penalty to whomever earns more for breach of contract by whomever decides to divorce.

Yes... in some states you have to pay your (ex)wife money for her pain and suffering for being subjected to the rape culture that is present day America and for having to endure you sticking your penis in her when she obviously never wanted you to.

In some states it's permanent alimony too. So if you married for 3 years divorced because she cheated on you (oops no fault divorce) you would be paying alimony until you die (sorry, doesn't stop at retirement).

It's a scam to transfer money from men to women.

IMHO a reasonable amount (not some life style they are use to crap) for a small period of time is ok. So say 2-4 years to give enough time for the other person to get on their feet, reeducated and back into the work force if needed. However if they already work, and make enough to live on then I think they should get nothing but their share of assets acquired DURING the marriage. And not something either side inherited unless it was willed to both or already had going in.
