For example, your title could have been "Am I reading these crimes statistics wrong?", which would tell people what the post is about.

Table 3 (Rate of violent victimization, by type of crime and
demographic characteristics of victims, 2021 and 2022) and
Table 5 (Percent and rate of violent victimizations reported to police, by demographic characteristics of victims, 2021 and 2022), right?

if I'm not mistaken the main difference is "reported to police". If I get it right, men and women have similar chances of being victims, but women are more likely to go to the police.

Table 3 on page 5 gives victimization rates in terms of rates per 1,000. Per 1,000 men and per 1,000 women. This is typically how I see crime victimization rates provided for yearly comparison, country comparison, etc.

Some of the other tables are giving victimization rates as a percent of the population. As you can see from one of the tables, this varies from the above because there are more women than men in the population. More total women than men being victimized doesn’t necessarily mean women are being victimized at a greater rate since there are more women. It really comes down to whether you want total numbers or rates per sex.

As another poster says, some tables are including estimates of unreported crimes .

As stated at the top of page 2., all this data is from yearly survey information, not from actual reporting data. I have to wonder why they don’t provide actual, absolute reporting data but instead rely on estimates from survey data. I wonder because I’ve read men and women tend to answer surveys differently.
