A lot of the atudies that come up with these extraordinarily high numbers are total bullish it. They have a very loose definition of “sexual assault”.

My partner designs studies for a living. Self reported studies should almost never be taken at face value. There is a difference between twenty percent of women have been raped and twenty percent of women, when asked such and such question, said they were raped. I can look at the study more later and give a more thorough look at it.

First note that this includes ATTEMPTED rape, not just rape. Also note that a major study with sample size over 22,000 found that, including attempted rape, 21.3% of women had been raped, as had 13.4% of men. Also note that this study was of college students. The fact that this shows male victimization of males is about 60% of female victimization while the CDC finds it's about 80% indicates more male victims as the sample gets older. Probably because the female libido peaks in the early 30s, so women would victimize men more as they get older. Your source does not measure male victimization. If it did, maybe they would have gotten 80% like the CDC did? Who knows? In this source, search OCSLS. But, yeah, that 20% figure shows up, question is, what is it for men? Remember, CDC says male rape is as common as female rape.

They made sure only women interviewed women, probably cause it is easier to say some things to a member of the same sex. Of course they did not extend the same courtesy to men.

Sadly, its probably acurate, for what it's asking (ie if you define rape the same way they do) pg 13

Rape was defined as an event that occurred without the victim’s consent, that involved the use or threat of force to penetrate the victim’s vagina or anus by penis, tongue, fingers, or object, or the victim’s mouth by penis. The definition included both attempted and completed rape. The following questions were used

(Pg 13 to see the questions.)

I'm guessing that using the same sort of questioning the rate for men would be similar.

The CDC for example found that the rate for men experiencing "some form of contact sexual violence" was almost 1in4 [source]

"some form of contact sexual violence" does include more than the "rape" in the study you linked included.

But its late here and I cant find a like for like comparison right now.

I will note that in the study you linked they did ask men. the same questions even. And found that:

1 of 6 U.S. women and 1 of 33 U.S. men has experienced an attempted or completed rape

But when you look closely at the questions you can see they are not "like for like" because most people are heterosexual, and most rapes are heterosexual, theirfore questions like this:

[Female respondents only] Has a [...]

I didnt fill out the rest of the question, (pg13) because unless you ask a male equivelant the rest doesnt matter, asking a question of only wen will automatically get more women responding yes.

Or

● Has anyone, male or female, ever made you have oral sex by using force or threat of force? Just so there is no mistake, by oral sex we mean that a man or boy put his penis in your mouth or someone, male or female, penetrated your vagina or anus with their mouth.

So men can say yes to this one, but women can be victims of both 'give and receive' from both genders but men can't.

Anyways I don't want to complain too much about the methodology because these things are better known now, and this research has improved signifigantly in this area since 1998
