"Officially"? By what authority does the SPLC operate?

[–]Ordinate1[S] 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

By what authority does anything operate?

The SPLC has pointedly refrained from labeling the Men's Rights Movement, as a whole, as a hate group; how much more reasonable could you ask them to be?

[–]mikesteane 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

By what authority does anything operate?

In the context of saying something is "official", there is an implied authority which might be state backing or possibly the say-so of an individual e.g. the official fan club of a performer. In this case saying that Avfm is officially a hate site implies that those defining it as such have some special authority. Otherwise, I, or anyone else, could simply say that it is no longer officially a hate site with equal force. I ask again, by what authority does the SPLC "officially" label anything?

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The SPLC is a group that monitors and classifies hate groups, among other things; that is what they do.

You can refuse to acknowledge their authority in this matter, as you appear quite ready to do, but many others will not.

I myself have questioned some of their decisions in the past, but it was specifically the issues like refusing the classify the Men's Rights Movement as a hate group that continue to garner my respect.

[–]mikesteane 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

They are self-appointed then. Thus no right to claim official status.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Name something that doesn't apply to.

[–]Aeponix 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Officials that are democratically chosen, as one example.

[–]mikesteane 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

People appointed to represent an individual or organisation by that individual or organisation.

[–]Aeponix 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The splc is a joke, and most people who've heard of them know it. They're just a social justice warrior group. Of course they hate men's rights groups.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

I'm not familiar with RoK, but I know for a fact AVFM is not a hate site. It's loud, rude, and provocative to make it's points, but it is not hate by any stretch.

Does the SPLC not understand the idea of satire and spectacle being used to confront or exhibit uncomfortable truth?

Or is that something only sites like Jezebel are allowed to use when discussing how great it is to abuse your boyfriend?

Seriously, the SPLC is a shady bullshit organization at this point who have outlived their usefulness.

[–]mikesteane 11 points12 points13 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not familiar with RoK

RoK is run by Roosh V who is not only not an MRA but has actively opposed the MRM.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Roosh V

That guy is so damned creepy!

[–]HiredMind 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SPLC is also the only "anti-hate" site to have inspired a terrorist attack.

[–]Ordinate1[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I know for a fact AVFM is not a hate site

I know for a fact that it is.

Does the SPLC not understand the idea of satire and spectacle

Yes, they do, which is why they pointedly refused to label the entire Men's Rights Movement as a hate group.

Or is that something only sites like Jezebel are allowed to use when discussing how great it is to abuse your boyfriend?

Now, that is a valid complaint!

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I know for a fact that it is.

Can you objectively prove this?

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Can you objectively define it?

The moderators at avfm, and I am convinced, Paul Elam, are not interested in solving the Gender Wars - they are trying to incite it, to use it as a wedge to divide people against each other.

That the Feminists are doing the same thing only goes to show that they are on the same side.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

You're just spouting opinions and second hand stories without any solid proof. Just because you got banned doesn't mean they're a hate group. This goes double for the SPLC saying so because they're a joke these days.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Just because you got banned doesn't mean they're a hate group

I never said that it did.

They are a hate group because they are seeking to exacerbate the problems that divide us rather than solve them.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Still not seeing any proof.....

I'm confused as to what this proves? Is there something deeper in than the first few messages that we're supposed to be seeing?

All I'm seeing is an angry senior member of the forums saying to not disregard mass murderers as idiots, which is smart. Especially since he specifically said he isn't condoning genocide.

If that's the worst you have, a forum member who denounces genocide, then I fail to see how that makes the site a hate group.

Are you one of those people who think it's a hate crime to say Islamic values are not congruent with western values? Because that's another thing groups like the splc would call hate, when it's just objective fact. Islamic values are misogynistic, and emphasize the dehumanization of non-believers. If you think that's a good value system to be letting in to our countries en masse, you are asking for non-muslims, especially women, to be treated horribly.

Similarly, the splc would consider the Google memo to be hate, when it's just a collection of scientific facts and statistics. It's not hate to say women have agency, make their own choices, and choose family over high paying careers, most of the time. But splc would say that's misogynistic.

You really don't understand your bedfellows at all.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Funny...AVFM isn't mentioned once...

[–]Ordinate11 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

That's an archive of the AVFM forum.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Seems I responded to the wrong link because I didn't even see this one. Sorry about that.

[–]Ordinate11 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Happens :o

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Yeah but now I have to dig through my in box and try to figure out what I should have been responding to.

[–]Razorbladekandyfan 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Geez, AVFM a male SUPREMACY website? Im sorry but even if you don't like that site, its a no on that accusation.

[–]Rethgil 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

How is that site any more "hateful" than many sites featuring feminists talking of killing men and boys and giving guides on how to make fake rape accusations and ruin men's lives?

[–]Ordinate1[S] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I never said that it was. That's not the point.

Yea, I think Jezebel and Feministing (and any Guardian page that includes the words "Jessica" or "Valenti") should be on that list, too, but we're not going to get there by being reactionary.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It isn't; those should get put on a list, too... which is the argument that we need to be making.

[–]GryphonFeathers 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Links? I had no idea there were so many such sites.

[–]PeonSupreme 4 points5 points6 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

“... the SPLC has gone too far...”

[–]ThePigmanAgain 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The retardation in the comments is amazing. Alternet has become such a joke that it isn't even funny any more. Kinda like the SPLC, now that i think of it!

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Alternet has always has some loopy people writing and commenting, but some of the stuff they publish is both fantastic and impossible to find anywhere else.

If you want the pathetic side of "liberal" journalism, try Talking Points Memo, Daily Kos or Raw Story.

[–]joeclark5 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The people in the comments sections of those sites can be pretty toxic. The sites raise some valid issues like this sub but there is too much hate in the comments.

[–]Ordinate1[S] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

there is too much hate in the comments.

That's the mods, though; if it were just members, you might have a point, but it's the people actually running the site.

[–]Sasha_ -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck you.

[–]Mythandros 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So a hate site like the SPLC calls another site a hate site. I should care..... Why?

[–]Ordinate1[S] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

I wish I could defend them, but I got banned for not being sufficiently hostile towards women.

Sorry, Paul, but if you wanted reasonable people to defend you, you shouldn't have acted like a fascist.

[–]PM_me_ur_swimsuit 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, Paul, but if you wanted reasonable people to defend you, you shouldn't have acted like a fascist.

Sounds like you should head over to r/menslib then....

[–]subthrowaway321 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I highly doubt that is the actual reason you were banned. I've seen some straight up craziness over there not result in a ban. My guess, is you had a disagreement, and started making personal insults to people with a different opinion. Your comment here is even smug as hell.

[–]subthrowaway321 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

[–]Ordinate1[S] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

My guess, is you had a disagreement, and started making personal insults to people with a different opinion.

Nope; the topic under discussion triggered one of the mods, who went on a tirade, locked the thread, then started banning me for mentioning the subject, resulting in a permaban when I escalated to Paul Elam ("My moderators would never do such a thing, so I don't have to go look...").

[–]subthrowaway321 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Still don't think you are telling the entire story.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh, you want the whole story? OK.

I was the OP of the "Political Ideology" thread, which was over 200 pages and had been going on for months when one of the moderators, Grumpy Old Man (GOM), decided that he was going to take part.

As has been noted, avfm can be a rowdy place, and I'm fine with that, but I cautioned GOM before I replied to the substance of his comment that he needed to decide whether to participate as a member of the discussion or as a moderator, because I didn't want him getting upset and making up a reason to shut down the thread.

This is exactly what happened, of course; I described one of his comments as "poorly thought out," so he closed the thread and banned me for a week for an "Ad Hominem" attack.

I came back, posted a new thread which started off with the second sentence: "If I were to say, 'GOM is an idiot and therefore we don't have to listen to anything that he says,' then that would be an Ad Hominem attack," and then went on to refute the other things that he had put in his last comment before closing the previous thread.

Permaban.

I emailed Paul Elam; I can forward his response to you, if you like, but it was, roughly, "I don't believe that my moderators would ever do such a thing, so I don't even feel the need to look into the matter." I have had a couple of run-ins with him around here, his response to which is to lie and then run away.

That's AVFM.

[–]Aeponix 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If this is true, then that mod is a dick, and Elam should have dealt with it. That said, I don't think that qualifies the site as a hate group.

Unless they're circle jerking over there about murdering feminists, I would just call them bad mods and insensitive idiots.

I have no love for AVFM, but I don't want to see any group frivolously labelled a hate group just because you had a disagreement with a bad mod. Most feminist groups aren't hate groups either, and I would defend them from the label the same way.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't think that qualifies the site as a hate group.

I never said that it did...

[–]ThePigmanAgain 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Elam is a jerk. This does not mean that AVFM is a hate group. AVFM today, our sub tomorrow. That would be a great way to get rid of us, and it won't surprise me if it happens.

[–]Ordinate1[S] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Elam is a jerk

+1000000000000

This does not mean that AVFM is a hate group

No, it doesn't; the fact that the moderators of the forum and discussion pages are bigots who harass people they dislike does.

AVFM today, our sub tomorrow.

That is definitely something to watch out for, yes.... but it's not the SPLC, it's the people running this sub that we need to watch.

That would be a great way to get rid of us

No, it wouldn't; oh, it sounds like the kind of thing small minded authoritarians would try, but it wouldn't work.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Bigoted mods does not equal a hate group. And by "us" i mean this sub. If the SPLC puts us on the list, the feminists who run Reddit will close down our sub. Of that i have no doubt.

[–]Ordinate1[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Bigoted mods does not equal a hate group.

Um, yes, it does. They are the face of the group; they are advocating hate; therefore, they are a hate group.

That's about as straightforward of an example of a syllogism as you will ever come across.

And by "us" i mean this sub. If the SPLC puts us on the list, the feminists who run Reddit will close down our sub. Of that i have no doubt.

Nor do I, but expecting to hold the feminists responsible is an exercise in futility, so we have to focus on not having the SPLC label us as a hate group by proactively policing ourselves.

It's not fair, it's not right, it's not even reasonable - but it's the way things are, and the way things have always been for every group seeking social justice.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

LOL! Your so-called syllogism is a joke.

X is the face of Y.

X is advocating hate.

Therefore Y is a hate group.

LOL
