Being rented out

As a girl I'm always extremely surprised when guys I know tell me they did something for neighbors or relatives, because it's true, girls don't live that kind of pressure.

I have to say tho, that here in Italy, guys even tell me they are not asked to help at all in their house. They tell me they never picked up a broom, nor cleared the table, and most of them never made their own bed unless they were alone. While I did all these things (and more) since I was a little girl.

As far as I know, here in Italy boys are asked to do things outside their house (even just: go get some milk!), while girls are asked to do things inside their house.

Do you believe this is true for your countries?

I remember when I was a kid my mother was taking money from both the government and my father. She did this by not declaring any of the money my father sent her. This wasn't very difficult as he was working overseas as an expatriate and not paying taxes. He also didn't care because he's always been of the mind that what is best for his children is all that matters. Love him, but not a very red pill man.

When I was a kid I felt dirt poor even though technically my family was not. All my clothes were worn out hand-me-downs from my older brothers and my few toys were also their second hand broken garbage. I went to school with no money and no lunch to watch all the other kids eat packed lunches or buy hot food from the cafeteria. I had one friend who used to share his food with me sometimes, but I felt like shit because he was legitimately poor and he was giving me half of his sandwich or whatever. I mostly ate at home and even at home there were long periods of time where all I ate was bread because bread was cheap.

Even when I was a little kid I could figure something was wrong. My friend was poor, and so his whole family was poor which made sense. But, if I was poor, how come just my shit sucked? The house I lived in was nicer than his, and my mom never wanted for anything. She wore nice clothes, drove a nice car, ate out constantly, and had everything she wanted. And I was eating bread like a peasant.

Well, turns out my mother wasn't poor at all. I was poor. My mother was just a cheap piece of human garbage. You probably figured that out already.

When I was about ten I decided to try to make my own money. Remember my poor friend from earlier? Well, I teamed up with him to go wash cars. We collected a couple of buckets and rags and we set out door to door to ask people if they wanted their cars washed. We charged $2. $1 for each of us. As children we had a poor understanding of the value of money and were both literally poor, so it seemed like a lot of money to us.

Now, my mother frequently ignored me for long periods of time so she didn't find out right away. But when she did she was pissed. She took the money I had earned and made me clean her car before making me give up on washing cars altogether.

There isn't any more to this story. I just feel you, /u/PowerToAnnihilate. Sometimes, people who are supposed to love you are just selfish shits who treat you like garbage. And the question is, if they treated you badly enough then why would you stick around once you can leave?

Building character is something that is important for community. Community doesn't involve slavery. It involves belonging, love, and respect to name a few core components. If none of those things exist, you aren't contributing to anything that is worth a damn.

Not a men's rights issue, but I will say that my parents did the same to me. As they should have.

You don't realize this while you're young, but raising a child is expensive in both money and energy. By the time you were 12, your parents could very well have spent upwards of 100g on room and board, to say nothing of medical and extra curricular.

So stop being an entitle little shit and be grateful for the lessons they were trying to teach you.

As an adult, there's a very effective answer to any request like this -- "No." "No" is a complete sentence. It requires no justification or explanation. It doesn't require an apology or suggesting an alternative.

Let's see it in action:

"Hey boxsterguy, can you help me move this weekend?" "No."

"Hey boxsterguy, I need someone to mow my lawn." "No."

"Hey boxsterguy, I'll give you beer if you paint my house." "No."

See how easy that was?
