"Bigorexia"? Body dysmorphia was already a thing

[–]LSTSMm 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It literally says in the film that "biorexia" is a commonly used name for muscle dismorphia.

[–]boringcarpets 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Commonly used? Never heard of it, my point was that body dysmorphia has been a thing for decades with application to both men and women

[–]the_unseen_one 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's common in weightlifting circles. Just because you haven't heard it doesn't mean it isn't common in context.

[–]boringcarpets 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Thing is it's not common, and context is that body dysmorhpia was already a definition. Calling it "bigorexia" makes it sound a like a joke, cheapens it

[–]the_unseen_one 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, the guy who just tried to pretend this didn't exist is the true authority on how common it is. Fuck off dude.

[–]boringcarpets -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

tried to pretend this didn't exist

Literally said it does exist and has existed for some time albeit under a different, more widely used, more widely applied word. Stop trying to make fetch happen

Silly boys, men don't suffer from body image and stereotyping.

[–]19O5 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Men who have body image issues might use steroids and they're instantly devils by doing so.

Women who have body image issues will get fake hair, fake teint, make up, fake lips, fake tits, fake ass etc., and that's totally accepted by the female society.

[–]Run_LikeHell 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair I think that might have to do with how controversial steroids are in general.

In the sports world they enhance performance and give an advantage to the user. They can be career ending if caught using them (even though they are ever prevalent in sports). And then there are the long term health effects, which we still don't know 100%.

These things facilitate the negative stereotypes of steroid users, while the fake [insert body part] are more external add-ons with less ramifications.

[–]AssAssIn46 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

and that's totally accepted by the female society.

If I'm being fair, it isn't. Most women who do this are called all sorts of shit.

He man vs barbie.

Look at our action stars.. Even wolverine has to cut to an unhealthy amount for the required look. We are expecting to look like that all the time.

The standards have gotten insane since the turn of the millennium. Proof positive is here: http://i.imgur.com/CVJnAfk.jpg\

Yep, that's Hugh Jackman in each 2000 and 2017. That's right, in 2000, that Hugh Jackman was considered fit and fierce enough to play Wolverine. In 2017, as you can see, the standards are a bit different.

Same Western society, same company, same franchise, same character, same fucking actor, and bloody well look at him. I spoke to my girlfriend about this and casually mentioned that Jackman takes steroids because he fucking takes steroids, and the reaction was shock. "How can he do that when he has kids? I feel like actors don't do that." Nonsense--he and half of the rest of the male movie stars these days are on serious drug regimens.

To be fair, I do think high standards for society are a good thing, that way we are challenged to be all that we can. But we're on a crazy train if we expect men in their forties to look a way you can only look if you go to the gym for potentially hours each day under the full oversight of a support staff, eat an absurdly strict diet, and, yes, use hormonal drugs that may have devastating long term effects.

PS: I have a buddy who is 22nd in Crossfit in my state, who my girlfriend met once. We discussed how he is on the very far end of human development, and he works out for four hours a day, sleeps eight hours each and every night, and eats like a machine. In other words, he lives his life around fitness, and power to him for that. But he does not look close to a (male) movie star these days. For fuck's sakes, I'm a really fit guy, can deadlift twice my bodyweight, run a half marathon and all that stuff, but girls generally say that I'm lean and mean. I guess if the standard is roided up movie stars who dehydrate themselves in order to film a shirtless scene, then yes, I am guilty of being lean and mean.

internet access (instant global connectivity) is accelerating competition / raising standards at rapid pace across all sectors. Human beings are evolving before our eyes

[–]frodegar -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The picture on the left has softer focus and is lit from all angles by diffuse light. On the right, he's pumped, oiled, and flexing while lit from the front from an undiffused light source. Those pictured may as well have been taken an hour apart and that includes time for the haircut.

[–]SworntotheDeath 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's true, lighting, oil and flexing make huge differences in appearance. I still hold that the standard now is absurd, compared to the standard earlier. It's true in many ways, look at the Batman of yesteryear compared to today, or James Bond, or anything. Male protagonists today are physical beasts compared to what they used to be.

EDIT: This is not to say that female beauty standards have relaxed or that women don't feel pressure to live up to unrealistic standards. It's just the typical MRA refrain: but what about the men?

[–]SaiHottari 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I know the point you're trying to make about extremes, but if you'll allow me to nit-pick for a moment:

Those who strive for self improvement should never be satisfied with their progress. Because however far you've come, you can always improve further.

The difference in what makes the extreme cases is what you are willing to do to yourself to improve. Steroids should be used in extreme moderation, if at all. Also, don't allow yourself to fall into depression if you haven't reached some perceived level.

[–]XGC75 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Talking semantics here, but saying "never satisfied with progress" is a terrible way to conduct a healthy lifestyle. Maybe you meant to say "never satisfied with laziness"?

I've been living a healthy lifestyle for a couple years now. Went from 180lbs to 165 and I'm back up to 170 after some weight training. I'm extremely satisfied with myself. Not only my self image but my mental state, as well. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop, because I know that if I do I'll lose the great mental state that good fitness puts me in.

Again I think it's semantics but it's important because I'd hate to think that you're promoting that we should never be grateful of or happy in our current state.

I'll be honest, I bigorexia and anierexia are more about an obsession with a idea of profection, then society's expectations, cased by problems in the brain, if it's not big muscles or low weight, it'd be eating healthy to such an extreme that it ironically becames unhealthy. Or something else. It's not society inflicting this it's a problem in the person's own brain.
