Has been for at least the last 10 years there's also the unspoken problem of steroid use among young adult and even older men.

It's usually termed striving for "fitness", but fitness for what: performing a triathlon every day?

Even the obsession with having a 6-pack abs doesn't seem to have any practical aim.

Actors have to endure grueling training to get into shape for a film shoot and as soon as they stop, they go back to "normal": it's not something that is sustainable, which suggests its not a normal biological state.

Are boys trying to become the fantasy super-heros they see in entertainment, because the actors that portray those characters are so successful?

We often forget that there are relatively few vacancies for super-hero actors and they have to punish their bodies to remain at that level and it isn't sustainable for long, so very few boys will be able to benefit from becoming like them. What are the rest of the boys going to do with their punished bodies? Narcisism isn't an encouraged avenue to justify doing it to themself. In any case, successful people still have similar issues in relationships as everyone else, despite generally being overwhelmed with offers. Celebrity or popularity is no guarantee of a happy, trouble-free life.
