Bill Maher is a walking contradiction: he's an avowed atheist and pro-science yet he's an anti-vaxxer, he alternates between sensible arguments and run of the mill propaganda. Not sure if he's really independent or he's just working on commission.

[–]NickSuccorso 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I alternate between loving his speeches to thinking he’s an idiot.

[–]Sardonislamir 8 points9 points10 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

WTF... He's an anti-vaxxer? How the fuck is that possible?

[–]topsecreteltee 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

He isn’t anti-vaccine as much as he doesn’t believe that children need as many as the AMA says they should have. Some stuff makes sense, others don’t. As I understand his concern is that at some point the risk is so low that it only makes sense because somebody is making money off it.

[–]Sardonislamir 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That is what vaccination avoids; lowers risk to negligible danger which would not be if it infects the herd. One active infection turns a low risk into a high risk issue.

[–]topsecreteltee 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Don’t shoot the messenger buddy. I’m just the advocate here. At what point does a vaccine no longer make sense? What if they could vaccinate against being struck by lightning? People die from it every year, if the survivors are lucky they don’t face chronic pain and burn scars... but would you vaccinate against it? That’s what he is getting at. Life is risk and at what point is it just somebody trying to exploit your fears to make money.

[–]Sardonislamir -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't shoot the messenger as the messenger self propels off a cliff to argue the point? Lightning strikes don't spread.

Read up on some polio history. As recently as 1988, 500,000 people died every year from it. Now only 3 countries roughly are considered epidemic zones due to conflict preventing proper medicine reaching them.

That's just one disease that is dangerous. In a society where cars, boats, and planes hope from continent to continent a strong and supportive immunization schedule ensures that a world wide epidemic cannot take root. You know those zombie movies and world doom?

We are more connected physically to other peoples than any other time in the written history of the world. Olden times an epidemic in one place would flare and die, spread by ship or travelers before being cut off(on purpose) or killing itself out.

Flue vaccinations are similar. Effort is to target and eradicate strain mutations from as much of the population as possible each season so that where it flairs it is limited in scope and concentration. If you have 1 person out of 10 get sick, only 1 is sick by the end. If you have 3 people out of 10 get sick, it is possible for the rest to become infected.

Immunization's goal is to keep it down to 1. One person struck by lightning.

[–]JewishAnomaly 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dang polios infectin' the world over! Get yer vaccine here!! Approved by a board of financial investors!

[–]omegaphallic 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a little more complicated then that, he's against certain vaccinations or at least was, not all, it's more he had some concerns. His position on GMOs is far more concerning, but his hearts in the right place.

[–]Hadashi_blacksky 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He also lies through his teeth when it suits him. He's one of those people who just doesn't care what he says except that everyone follows his particular set of opinions and beliefs.

[–]U21U6IDN 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

avowed atheist

I don't know how religious status has any relevance on one's beliefs in regards to vaccines.

pro-science

You can chalk it up to the acceptance that government and industry do conspire together or in parallel to hide facts and shape narrative to their advantage. There's an article posted at least once a week on reddit about how a scientific study/paper/publisher is influenced by the people who pay for it.

[–]faithful_nomad 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

The calling card of militant atheists is how skeptical they are, how they don't believe because evidence, etc etc. So when you have an atheist that can discard religion due to evidence and skepticism, but then ignore the evidence on the safety of vaccines, you're going to at least get a double take.

[–]U21U6IDN 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What I said does not conflict with your argument about the skeptical atheist. Perhaps he's skeptical? Remember when glyphosate was safe enough to drink? I do. I remember an "expert" stating as much.

[–]faithful_nomad 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair point, I guess we're really up the creek. :/ All opinions are equally valid, we're all skeptics in the end anyways.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Seriously. He's just a troll I think, under the guise of being a rational host.

[–]robotir 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've heard him say he's a libertarian. The dude has no ducking clue what he's talking about.

[–]Vwar 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Maher stated, “I do think that when Trump said, ‘It’s a very scary time for young men,’ yes, let’s get out the world’s smallest violin. But…it does seem like things have morphed from, listen to any woman who says she’s been wronged, which is the right thing to do, to automatically believe. That’s what’s scary.”

Literally contradicted himself in this very statement.

If a woman can accuse a man with zero evidence and the man has no recourse to defend himself that it is indeed terrifying. But apparently we're simultaneously supposed to mock the idea that men should be concerned. Maher is an idiot.

[–]ArchVileRespawned 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But apparently we're simultaneously supposed to mock the idea that men should be concerned.

It's not that men shouldn't be concerned. The "believe women" crowd either doesn't care or relishes the chance.

[–]JohnChrissy 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

even as much as I'm sad Bill has sold out to the SJW left on many fronts, what he said needed to be said and always needs to be said!

[–]Hadashi_blacksky 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Never liked the guy, personally, but he has a point here.

[–]goober_boobz 7 points8 points9 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Bill Maher is just worried that the SJW left is coming for him, and rightly so. He's already there on the left, so he doesn't have anywhere to hide when the false accusations start coming in. His karma will be sweet.

[–]Lethn 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair to Bill Maher, even though he is an unapologetic lefty, he does have people like Milo and Jordan Peterson on his shows when no one else would really touch it as a talk show topic.

I wonder if like many in his position he wishes he could say what he really thinks but he needs to tow the democrat party line non-stop in order to keep his show. I can't really figure him out unlike the others, on the one hand he warns about false accusations on the other he brings out people like the hunting ground documentary types who were blatantly fraudsters.

I think you're right, he is trapped and he just doesn't know what to do about the crazies he's unleashed. I wonder if he even realises there's a much bigger world out there than just the studio he lives in.

[–]Vwar 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He only uses escorts, unless I'm mistaken. So not a high risk.

[–]goober_boobz 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You mean he uses women who prefer money as a means of transaction, like most paid protestors and liberal feminists. I doubt it would be hard to get a prostitute to bring accusations up, especially if her gofundme can get clicks. Blasey-Ford made $750K with no evidence. And look at Christiano Ronaldo, he paid an escort $300K and she still brought accusations back years later. Dating escorts won't get you a pass if the check is big enough for front page news.

[–]Vwar 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fair points.

[–]ReasonItOut 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Guy is an arrogant asshole is entirely dismissive of problems facing males (not to mention white males whom he has completely written off) and rarely follows his own ethics.

It is good however that he is at least stopping short of presuming guilt.

[–]clamnit 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bill Maher is the most insufferable asshole in the world.

[–]Cristi_Tanase 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

they lost the moral compass a long time ago, also he tried to make a moral/legal point and the shills started foaming about "the republicans"...

demented feminists rules and laws affect everyone, not only republicans or democrats! Even those that never ever voted are affected by the demented witch hunt culture, but the shills cannot stop shilling, for them is all about power and if you're not a "democrat" you're a "republican" and that is BAD!

with this black and white demented shilling they are actually forcing a lot of decent democrats to vote republicans for the first time ever

In full context, it's a bit less sympathetic. He says it's scary, but also couldn't resist the "worlds smallest violin" jab.

Welp, it's only a matter of time now. What do you think are the odds of an outrage and public twitter apology?
