One side (usually the father) doesn't want it

This is only in cases where the woman didn't get consent from the father to have a baby because they didn't talk about it ahead of time.

A lot of men want children, they just want them in the right circumstances with the right woman.

A lot of women on the other hand see children as "a way out" (ie from work) or as a way to trap a man who otherwise had no intentions of getting into a serious relationship with her.

That's why this dichotomy exhausted.

Women don't always want children, they want the side effects that having a child brings with it.

Men, likewise, tend to not be against the idea of having a child, but do tend to be against everything that comes with having a child.

Change the incentives and you'll see a change in attitudes. Fewer women will want children but more men will decided to have them. That should, in theory, benefit both men and women who actually want to have children for the right reasons.

It's been my experience that "child support" is, in all practical terms, "private mandated subsidy for single mothers." Here's a likely scenario:

Father makes $28 an hour in a hard-labor job that's $4500 a month, Mother makes $12 an hour working in an office somewhere, that's $2000 a month. They have two kids. Income disparity, give me a break, not a part of this discussion.

Best-interest factors for child custody will favor traditionally female gender roles, so women win custody more often than not. Father's child support for two kids is somewhere near $700 a month because of his income. That's enough to pay for a two-bedroom apartment anywhere except a large city.

Because of the income disparity, Mother and Father are in different tax brackets. Father's disposable income is now closer to $2600 a month (after taxes and child support). We'll assume that he doesn't pay spousal support. But Mother's post-tax income is around $1800, plus the $700 in child support, and because her income is low enough, she qualifies for around $500 in SNAP benefits, and hundreds more in daycare assistance. But Father doesn't see that. He only sees Mother driving around in a new car and a nice apartment because her food, daycare, and rent are basically paid for, and her income is her spending money.

Father is grinding away on $2600 a month busting his ass; she's blowing her boss and everyone else in town and bringing in $3500, while the daycare watches the kids from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

Here's the kicker. Let's say the Court gives 50/50 custody. Well, the Court figures out what each party's child support obligation would be, and then the higher income pays the difference. That's usually the Father. In our example above, Father's obligation is $700, and Mother's is around $400. So Father pays $300 instead. In reality, it should be halfway in between so each parent meets halfway.

All of the other benefits still apply, but Father makes too much for daycare assistance or other benefits during his weeks. So now Mother brings in $3200, Father brings in $2900, but Father shells out an extra $400 for his daycare per month, so he's down to $2500...He has his kids half the time and struggling financially and Mother is still rolling in it....and she'll eventually use his lack of resources to justify suing for primary custody.

That's why child support sucks -- it's one part of the subsidization of single mothers, except the state doesn't pay it, the Father does.

Now imagine all of this with a $500/mo spousal support payment as well.

What really doesn't make sense is when the father has 50% or higher custody and still has to pay.

It's really called Bitch Support. Because it's really the bitch that uses most of the support
