Equal has meant “the same as” since I was in grade school at least.

Two plus two equals four and two plus two is the same as four mean the same thing. I treat men and women equally is the same as I treat men and women the same.

Treating men and women equally doesn’t mean Women and men are equal, it’s the treatment of them that is equal in that statement.

What purposely muddies the water these days are terms like parity and equity which sound equal but in reality are often achieved by discrimination or unequal treatment.

Equal means no one is higher and other is lower. Men are generally stronger, but if because someone is a man but he is expected to do blahblahblah BECAUSE he is a man, and a woman is not expected BECAUSE she is a woman, that's gender inequality, at least in my opinion.

Think of equal in terms of rock paper scissors, each choice has the same power over another as well as one weakness. They are all different, but equal in terms of opportunities and failures.

Now is this what feminists think equal means? Who knows. But it's a good goal imo that protects our differences.

Equal meant equal oppurtunities and protections under the law. Like how marital rape was legal for a long time, or how workplace discrimination used to be alowed.

The most sacred belief and largest source of double think among the left is that of tabula rasa - the blank slate. To even discuss biological differences puts you in the danger zone and if those discussions cut against the leftist religious dogma around race or gender then it's taboo. Even tenured professors can't cancelled when they cross that line in what would otherwise be legitimate research.

So yes, there are profound differences between men and women that extend far beyond physical appearance. Physiological, psychological, behavioral differences. Cognitive, affective, motivational, and neurobiological differences. The double think is that these things can be somewhat admitted within the hard sciences as long as they are heavily contextualized but are verboten in any other domain to the point where most people are generally unaware of them at all.

The reason why the belief in a pure cultural explanations are so useful to them is that if people come to believe it in general than any imbalance between genders can then be dressed up as a matter of oppression and discrimination axiomatically - instead of admitting they may be the result of inherent interests and evolutionary psychology. Of course, such rhetorical weapons are only wielded against men: Men making up the majority of stem is proof of discrimination, but women making up the majority in healthcare is not. Finance is a boys club, but teaching being extremely female dominated is not seen as a problem.
