I used to think the whole concept of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a gaslight, because the definition is super vague and many institutions try to avoid at any cost. For instance UNHCR will say that GBV is "serious violation of human rights", is "preventable" and "women and girls are especially at risk". But not what it is. And Wikipedia will outright say that GBV actually is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_women and nothing else.

The typical definition goes something like "gender based violence is when victim is attacked because of its gender". But how do we know that victim was attacked because of its gender?

Luckily, the European Commission has a clear definition:

Gender-based violence is violence directed against a person because of that person's gender or violence that affects persons of a particular gender disproportionately.

The Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, aka 'Istanbul Convention', says something similar:

d “gender-based violence against women” shall mean violence that is directed against a woman because she is a woman or that affects women disproportionately;

That pretty much sums it up. Men are, by far, victims of the most crime as well as over-incarceration. MGM trumps FGM by many orders of magnitude. Men are forcibly conscripted under the thread of violence. Intimate partner violence between men ad women are within the same order of magnitude. Women are possibly more effected by sexual violence, although most victims of rape are men, due to prison rape.

I think it is time to update the Wikipedia page.
